Fiscally insane, institutionally unsustainable. But the solution isn’t just more officers. It’s a comprehensive staffing study and department reorganization that best puts our public employees and tax dollars to work.

With 800+ vacancies and a total staffing level of 3,185 sworn officers, the department has no choice but to crush employees with mandatory overtime. Maybe it’s time to repeal the “reform” nonsense passed by the Council in 2020.
Interesting: Per a new report to the D.C. Council, MPD officers have done $110 million worth of overtime so far this fiscal year (Oct. 2024 to date). Of that, $61 million was paid by the city, significantly above the $17.5 million budgeted for the entire year.
