Selling sex is not morally corrupt. Incarcerating people, taking away their housing and/or children, and making it harder for them to support themselves financially is morally corrupt.
Anti trafficking hysteria leads to dystopian future where women are not allowed to eat/drink/travel alone without being accused of being a whore.
Who knew?
Oh, right. Sex workers knew.
So many people are focused on ridding the world of sex work (impossible) when we should be working on ridding the world of the cruel ways we treat sex workers (very possible).
People are obsessed with asking SWers how/why they got into the industry because they assume *something* big must have happened to make them consider doing this work. But in reality, the answer is often as simple and boring as needing to pay bills.
Having sex for money and having sex for free are both okay, because having sex is okay. As a society, we really need to get more comfortable with the idea that sex is not bad.
Sex work doesn't cause misogynistic behavior. That behavior was born from and remains normalized in our patriarchal society. You can't kill misogyny by abolishing sex work, you have to abolish the patriarchy.
SWers are, always have been, and always will be a part of the community. Stop trying to clean us up like trash. We are your neighbors, and we aren’t going anywhere.
Sex work isn't always empowering but it can be. Same can be said for sex and work. How come when we put them together people demand that it always be empowering in order for it be "okay" and legit???
sex can be intimate. sex can be transactional. sex can be romantic. sex can be casual.
sex can be all sort of things and can be more than one thing at once.
what sex shouldn't be is criminalized.
sex work is work, but that doesn't mean the industry is perfect.
however, sex work is held to a different standard than other professions due to whorephobia and social stigma.
stop expecting sex work to be flawless in order for it to be legit.
plz and ty xoxo!
Why is everyone so obsessed with what is "real" or "hard" work anyway? We're all just trying to put food on the table, why does it have to be as hard as possible? Who is that for?
"sex work is work" legitimizes the work aspect but also legitimizes sex worker's right to be more than the work they do. work is just work, and that includes sex work.
SO ACTUALLY WE WANT FULL DECRIMINALIZATION OF SEX WORK, NOT LEGALIZATION. LEGALIZATION KEEPS LAW ENFORCEMENT AND WHOREPHOBIC REGULATIONS IN OUR WORK AND WE DON’T WANT THAT.
If you're a feminist against slut shaming, may we interest you in also being against shaming people for having sex when money is exchanged as well?
Come on in, the water is fine.
Telling sex workers their work isn't consensual, even if they think it is, is so condescending and harmful.
Please view us as the humans capable of full thought and comprehension that we are!
A world without sex work will never exist, but a world with more violence against sex workers can. Stigmatization and criminalization only lead to harm.
Porn is incredibly popular, and yet porn actors are widely shamed and stigmatized. How're you going to disrespect the people giving you the content you love?!
If you're struggling to accept sex work as a legit job, perhaps ask yourself *why* you want someone to feel shame for how they pay their bills. Does it maybe have more to do with you and your ideas about sex than it does with the sex workers themselves?
If you don't want kids learning about sex by watching porn, then you must provide comprehensive sex ed. Porn is not sex ed. Sex ed is sex ed. Resources are our friends.
People talk about SWers as if we're helpless victims, and not the resilient cultural leaders who have truly withstood the test of time that we are. Show some respect.
Wild thought: All people, whether they have ever participated in sex work or not, should have access to services and support to avoid exploitation, stay safe, and make choices about their own lives.
Reminder that the Nordic Model (an approach to SW policy that criminalizes the buyer but not the seller) aims to eradicate SW, and that is NOT what we are here for. Full decrim, now.
Sex workers have a right to unencumbered access to the building blocks we all need to move our lives forward. This includes access to banking and investment services, healthcare, education, legal assistance, relevant government programs, and technology platforms.
New Years resolution: abolish the whorearchy!
The whorearchy refers to an often classist and racist hierarchy that SWers engage in to differentiate themselves from other types of SWers.
Basically, it's when SWers weaponize what privilege they have at the expense of their peers.
just like someone you know is a sex worker, someone you know is a client. neither parties engaging in sex work deserve to be shamed and/or criminalized for it.
so POTUS gets a 12 hr timeout for inciting a coup and SWers get banned from social media for having the audacity to show some ass/exist? i need a drink.
People are sometimes worried about what you can and cannot say to sex workers as allies, so may we suggest something that is always welcome: "How can I pay you?"
it's totally normal that we all like to have sex in different ways. some of us are comfortable with having sex for money and others aren't. both are fine!
September 14 is Sex Worker Pride Day.
First recognized in 2019 by
@globalsexwork
, this day extends to all communities marginalized by criminalization, discrimination, and stigma across the sex worker movement, including workers, clients, facilitators, friends, and family.
Thankful for hoes, whores, sluts, bitches, witches, skanks, freaks, hustlers, tramps, foul mouths, strippers, full service sex workers, street workers, online sex workers, baddies, and all the old pros far and wide and in between.
A lot of people think that selling sex is "wrong" or "degrading," but they never stop to ask themselves why.
Just because the patriarchy says so, doesn't make it true. In fact, it's quite the opposite.
"You let men objectify you."
1. Objectifying a human being is entirely on the person doing the objectifying. No one else is in control of or responsible for that.
2. We get objectified everyday for free. Again, it's out of our control. At least in SW we are getting paid.
Criminalizing SW — and we cannot stress this enough — does NOT help, it only harms. Sending in more police to harass, deport, and assault vulnerable migrant street workers does nothing but put these people in danger.
When SWers and advocates ask repeatedly for the full decriminalization of SW, we very much mean the FULL decriminalization of SW. None of this "partial decriminalization" BS.
If you don't think people should be shamed for being sl*ts for free, wouldn't it make sense to also fight against people being shamed for being sl*ts for money???
Do the people who say that "selling sex is degrading" realize that they're the ones who are perpetuating that very idea by simply claiming that to be true when it is fundamentally and factually not the case. The call is coming from inside the house.
I think it’s important for Christian legislators to ask themselves, what would Jesus do? I may be paraphrasing but I think he said “stop throwing rocks at whores!”
With all of the news breaking of high profile subjects charged in our area for prostitution, we would like to keep the narrative alive about the victims and the problem of human trafficking. Please retweet!
@Polaris_Project
If anyone ever tries to diss you by saying you look like a prostitute/stripper/etc. just say "thank you." They're basically just calling you hot and interesting.
Here's an idea: instead of eradicating porn just bc it doesn't serve as a realistic form of sex ed for young people, we actually provide young people with comprehensive sex ed. Let porn be porn and sex ed be sex ed. Idk just a thought!
The anti-porn movement won't stop at porn. People trying to abolish sex work won't stop at sex work.
If you believe in bodily autonomy, sexual freedom and expression, you will be a part of this fight eventually. May as well join us now.
Where did the term “s*x work” come from? Carol Leigh, a.k.a. The Scarlot Harlot, coined the term and dedicated her life to the SWer rights movement. This episode of
#TheOldestProfessionPodcast
pays tribute to her life and legacy.
Changing the stories we tell about sex workers can start with you. Talk to your people about sex workers in a positive light and help us eradicate the stigma surrounding sex work.
Two of the most influential leaders of the LGBTQ+ movement were trans SWers, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. SWers have always been part of the making of history, and queer liberation would not be possible without us.
Porn is sometimes unrealistic! It's not a documentary! Many movies are also not real! Lord of the Rings, for example...some pretty unrealistic things in there (elves, hobbits, a world with only white people)...
Old Pros Tip: if you're thinking of asking a SWer a personal question, ask yourself if you would ask any other kind of worker that same question and feel comfortable and appropriate.
Treat SWers with the same respect you treat other workers <3
Telling people how to have sex is puritanical and rooted in patriarchy.
Having sex for money should be a decision you get to make for yourself, not one the state can make for you.
