Early Japanese computers games often favored resolution over color count, so the typical PC game was 640x480 in 16 colors when western games were ~320x240 in 256 colors. Japanese game artists at that time excelled at using (custom) 16 colors palettes.

Simple rendering trick for 2D games: manually distorting background sprites (here: the large statue) as if they were mapped on a 3D surface. Helps break the flatness of some scenes. (I don't recall posting about it before, but I used this in The Dragon's Trap, 2017 @lizardcube )

What throw me off with those specialized rendering tech is that everything in the creative and rendering pipe is optimized for static contents. It’s just so much easier, and as a result you tend to get static scenes, zero interactions.

One of the guiding perf principle of Dear ImGui has always been that the average number of allocations per frame should be ~0. Mostly allocate on growth frames (e.g. first time showing a new window, expanding contents), all amortized. Anything else is considered a bug.

To be honest at this point I find as a society we are failing to deserve open-source. Maintenance is a tedious job. Countless companies using software with zero intent to help paying decently for its quality and maintenance (and thus their _own_ safety) even when directly asked.

Some Dear ImGui users are pushing boundaries of using an agressive amount of custom widgets & styling. It's not an out-of-the-box route & has limitations, but we're slowly pushing toward making that route viable (shot 1 @parsecteam , shot 2 @particubes , shot 3 NoahGameFrame).

I sincerely don’t know if some C++ articles are parody anymore. The most worrying thing is that there’s a “Lesson Learned” section and the only important lesson was not learned there.

dear imgui users: while still a long way off, one thing I've been working on lately has been to design an automation/testing system that will be used to test both core imgui and end-user apps. Tests can run headless (command-line, no rendering), at slow human watchable speed etc.

Never investigated programming extensions for Visual Studio's debugger (few have, and it is a bit disappointing we don't yet have low entry-bar, highly programmable debuggers). This ZX Spectrum emulator however seems very well integrated in VS IDE:

Feature-wise, people don't realize that submitting a PR is often doing 20% of the job, I have to evaluate it with the lens of everyone's interest, rework it and then maintain it forever. In a fair system studios should pay to post their PR! Logic has been turned upside down.

I discovered only 6 months ago that in your browser you can hold ALT to start a selection from within a clickable link. It's super useful, I often felt frustrated when copying web text before. Felt like sharing that info again!
