I grew up knowing that people got hauled away for not having the right papers, aware of Checkpoint Charlie, knowing the government could tape mics to the walls of your hotel room, knowing that someone with the wrong things in their luggage could be imprisoned without question.

I know it's cliche to say parents and kids don't always understand each other, but I think I do have a legit reason to say that's true in my case. My eldest's blog:

Was it really a lunch-hour coincidence that led to the death of the Archduke in Sarajevo in 1914—and, by extension, World War I?

Have you met the parents of Zoomers?! My money is on it being the parents who are insisting on going with their kids.
Survey: 77% of Zoomers have brought parent to job interview, 45% have parents call bosses regularly https://t.co/xk6ZE5khE0

Lenin eventually redefined kulak to mean anyone who “detests Soviet authority”. One of the misconceptions of Communism is that it’s an economic ideology; in reality, it always devolves into despotism. It’s about more than an economic threshold.
One of the most interesting features of the communist revolution in Russia was how the definition of “the rich” kept lowering and lowering until came to include any peasant with a couple of cows or a few acres of land (aka the ‘kulaks’). 1/2

we traded diversity for connectivity gained the world, lost the neighborhood. everyone knows the same memes but nobody knows their neighbors. previous generations moved cities to become different people. now you can't escape yourself. your digital footprint follows everywhere.

nobody talks about how the internet killed regional culture. everyone under 30 has the same personality now. your grandparents' generation had accents, local customs, regional humor. you have tiktok trends and twitter discourse.

“My generation is obsessed with treating every trait as a symptom of a disorder. You’re not shy, you’re autistic. You’re not forgetful, you’ve got ADHD.” This is an EXCEPTIONAL piece from @TheFP

Were you born with the incurable drive to find the one shareable meme that will allow your analytics to exceed last week’s numbers — or were you born with a story inside you?
