And already the ramifications of this for parents and babies are not good. Families here are incredibly resilient, but their stories of the ways this closure has had an impact — and the choices they’ve had to make— have been heartbreaking.

This hospital closure is indeed the canary in the coal mine for all medical care, not just OB. The full ramifications of this will take years to see, but it won’t be good. ⁦@pasantemd⁩ ⁦@WCAAP

Watching this and thinking about my work in Yakima, which, like many places in the PNW, is >70 miles in all directions from another hospital that cares for kids and > 100 miles from a PICU. (cc: @pasantemd @KieranKathleen @WCAAP).

This. Brilliant, heartbreaking, and true. Grateful to @gradydoctor for this powerful illustration of the inexorable links between health and systemic inequities — whether you want to name them or not — and the care we should be providing to our patients.

1/.There are things that happened that led to things that happened that led to things that are happening. If you don't want to call it by a name, just describe it. And instead of it feeling like some pressured mandate, look at it the way we look at all things. As history.

Read this. #Dontlookaway Pediatricians (and so many others) work hard every day to keep children safe. We do our jobs. Beyond time for politicians to do theirs.

This graph just remakes this point: A remarkable increase in deaths from firearms and a simultaneous decrease in deaths from MVCs over the last decades. Neither by chance but due to decisions to make cars and roads safer for our kids and make it easier to kill people with guns

So, tonight, as those of us who are lucky enough to hug our kids a little closer are thinking about the families who aren't so fortunate, I’d ask [us] to think about how they can get our government to change these laws, and to save lives, and to let young people grow up.

So the notion that gun violence is somehow different, that our freedom and our Constitution prohibits any modest regulation of how we use a deadly weapon… doesn’t make sense.

“Each year, 4.7–13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion” @WHO . Banning abortion does not prevent abortion. It just stops safe abortion. This is healthcare. And access to it that is safe, timely, respectful, and affordable is a human right.
