I just really think you should stop scrolling and take a moment to slowly read this short piece from the majestic Clarice Lispector. This book has inserted itself among my treasured favorites and I t will wait patiently, thumbed and thought of often, on my shelf or bedside table.
Whelp, you folks weren’t kidding. This is a simply splendid novel (1/2 through).
Effective foreshadowing and still very visceral somehow, oddly hilarious at times, beautiful meditations on the nature of love, but also obsession, self-delusion, perception and memory.
Whoa. 👏🏻🤩
“Not everything I write is fully realized, it's often only an attempt. And that is also a pleasure. Because I don't want to grasp everything. Sometimes I want only to touch. And sometimes what I touch blossoms and then other people can grasp it with both hands.”
Absolutely fucking astounding novel. Explorations of the biggest moral questions we face as a species. Using very real people and events, Labatut somehow makes things like quantum mechanics, logic and complex mathematics totally riveting. Only my fifth 5⭐️ read of the year 👏🏻
60 pgs into this, my 6th Lispector, has been easily her most challenging and ‘plot’ focused, yet with all the existential and psychological density still has me enraptured. She’s just amazing…
Gorgeous edition and cover too eh?!
Here are my planned monthly (hopefully) group reads for 2023. Bottom is January, top is December. Please message me if one or more catches your eye. I hope to organize some live chats. Happy holidays readers! 😄📚
My year in reading for those interested. So many fantastic and memorable books. I base my rating system on two things: moment to moment enjoyability while reading and the degree to which it lingers in my mind afterwards.
Stay tuned for my planned monthly group reads for 2024!
I just picked up this edition!😄 I’ve been considering a second reading of it for quite some time. I have an extra copy so decided to slip one into our community library box with a brief note..
Done.
I’m floored. The sustained brilliance is so impressive. How the fuck does he do it?! A-and the brilliant translation by Szirtes?! I feel like L.K’s work represents the embodiment of what fine literature should be, and I’ve only read two from him!😄
5 great big shiny ⭐️’s
Fuck. Once again I may be trapped in the Kraznahorkai web, of which extrication no easy feat. Those walls of text. These slithering sentences. The silly strangeness and sense of impending doom. I don’t ‘binge’ books, but already my eyes hurt, and I’ve got shit to do!
This, the story of a butler, is as close to perfect as a novel can get! My second time through it after 14 years, as I hoped, has only magnified my appreciation and fortified my resolve to revisit more favorite books. A truly joyous (re)reading experience! Going to watch the film
Whenever I’m mired in a reading (or spiritual) rut, I turn to this and become filled with a mysterious and joyful gratitude. These stories are so resonant and affecting. I treasure this book like few others.
Rereading. Part of me believes it’s truly the best way. But there is that FOMO that kicks in right?! Here are four books that I think about rereading most. All of them 5⭐️ masterpieces that have lingered in my psyche. But, what about all the good stuff I still need to get to😩
I’m craving a big one, and found myself pulling this off the shelf. Hugely intimidating, I must say, but I’m resolved to give it my very best efforts. Suggestions, comments??
I could use some help, so please join me if you’re so inclined 😎😄
Enduring a Krasznahorkai hangover but there’s this big, bold, beautiful piece of critically acclaimed historical fiction. Here’s my gently used copy that I acquired through exchange. This one plainly oozes allure and appeal. I’m thinking some time in 2024…
DM if interested!📚
Finished. Speechless. 6 weeks and I’d do it all over again. This book is something really special, and should stand forever as a testament to human imagination and storytelling. Chime in here, as I fear its intimidating heft, scope, and grandiose acclaim will turn readers away.
This was one of the most enjoyable reading experiences of my life. Absolutely hilarious and filled with heart, I loved every single moment with it. Levin is so perceptive and tuned in to our shared human experience. One of the very best out there. 5⭐️ easy. Don’t sleep on it!
Resolved to read more non-fiction, I’m baffled for how long I slept on this. Couldn’t resist dipping in to these short pieces while I’m in the deluge, and this one made me think of Markley right away. Splendid. Lispector’s 25 years means 1992. So, how’d we do with these leaders?
Had a birthday gift card, thought I’d order this humongous thing. It appears beautifully complex and incredibly daunting. As always, I’d love to hear your takes on it. Ideally, I’ll get to it some time this decade, but, you know how it is..😗😏🤓
"Have you read all these books?" (the answer is no, he hasn't read all of them; but he has looked at them and held them and touched them and flipped through them; he has been collecting them with the idea of someday reading them and because he needs to have them with him, nearby)
A few days now since finishing ‘Trilogy’ and it’s been on my mind like crazy. I had to get my hands on this and very much looking forward to a date with it soon.
My humble
@nyrbclassics
collection.
I know I’m not the only one around here drawn to these slick books! I’ve only read the Williams and Gass thus far. Soooo, which one should I get to next and why?!
Pleasant reading to you all 🤓
Let me try this again. Folks are too nice to point out I’m a doofus and the tweet called for masterpieces of the 21st CENTURY!….🙄😔
Here are my updated selections..
My holiday reading. Fosse took some getting used to, but I ended up loving it. Such elegantly simple and rhythmic prose with wonderful storytelling. I’ll be treating myself to a brand new copy of ‘Septology’. Those essays are also immensely enjoyable. Reading about reading is 😍
Although I’ve already read it and own the paperback, I couldn’t resist this enormous hardcover.
A-and while I’m at it, let me just say again that this is one of the greatest things ever created by anyone, and it’s not as impenetrable as it seems.

What would our passions and preferences be without the odd struggle?! Here’s a stack of big books I own that have defeated me. Effort was not corresponding with rewards, which is a ME issue, not the author. I would be blessed to have a chance to try these again some day.
Revelatory. These stories are teeming with brilliance. This woman was so gifted, so wise. It’s life-enhancing literature that alters perspective and consciousness. I will return this to my library right after I pick up my own brand new copy to treasure and share.
This is just, like, my opinion man. Compelling, vast and unflinching fiction about the Vietnam war. Long but never dull. While I usually prefer more freewheeling and adventurous novels, this plot/dialogue centered story is deftly executed. And this is not ‘Nam, there are rules😎
I’m on page 45 and already the sense is brewing that I’ve got something pretty special in my hands. Going to take it slow as I can. Btw Cheers to everyone for a blessed and bookish 2024. 😃🤓📚
While it’s not on par with the majestic and near-perfect ‘Riddley Walker’, I was stoked to read more from Hoban. It’s filled with the same reckless imagination and care for words. He was a truly singular author.I plan on ordering ‘Turtle Diary’ from
@nyrbclassics
Any Hoban fans?
Happy

day!
The man who I believe is the world’s greatest living writer changed the way I read and approach fiction. The time spent in his fascinating worlds are always more than worth it. Cheers to all the Paranoids out there and HBD Mr. Pynchon!😃
Attention all you who love your big, postmodern, meta, absurd, playful, challenging, unconventional, hilarious, profound, bold, erudite books: You’re going to want to seize this one. It’s also part one of a trilogy.
I first experienced this astounding piece of literature via Audible about 6 years ago and I finally found a hard copy in the wild! That final scene..😮😍👏🏻 I’ll never forget it.
Williams was a master.
Approaching the final chapters I daresay, with the exception of IJ, no novel has so comprehensively consumed me. It’s..filled with tenderness, incisively intriguing, structurally bold but accessible, thrillingly suspenseful, disturbing, fuckin hilarious, and needs a publisher!😐
Approaching p100 and this one seems to be picking up for me. I enjoy the plight of this narrator as he navigates the absurdities of war. Funny, but also unflinching. Very curious to see what Celine does with the rest, because it’s not short. But the Laszlo hangover is through!
It has arrived. The unprecedented hype and resounding adoration of this book has created childlike levels of excitement and big book dopamine for me. I’m not sure when I’ll get to it, but will certainly enjoy its presence on the shelf until that moment.
Hey Tweeps, I hope you’re reading and living well. This July, I’m doing a group read of this insanely intimidating gigantic book. Thinking about how I want to tackle it, for those who’ve read it, bravo, and are there any tips or tricks that’ve proved useful for ya?!😃 I’m scared.
Well 2 weeks into the New Year and my experience with these have been nothing short of mind-blowingly fantastic. They are perfectly disparate and shaping up to be easy 5 star reads. Both are true genius, I must say. What’s everybody else got going on?Let’s have it..😃
So, it does exist!…
Years of anticipation. Months of patience. Finally this enigmatic, enchanting and elusive tome has landed. No doubt, it’s a beauty to behold.
I’m thinking early next year.
Should probably get a little group going no?! 🤓📚
2/3 update: remains provocatively challenging with it’s brilliant brewing narrative, replete with her trademark explorations of existential consciousness. Just finished a section that can only be called perfect. Mind-altering immersion, the rewards of which can’t be understated.
This might be the best piece yet. Perfectly encompasses her unique style. In it, she talks about HER UNIQUE STYLE!..
To me, she remains the most alluring and captivating author I’ve ever come across and I know I’ll be reading her for the rest of my days.
#lispectorisms
Truly curious how many of you nerds stick to one book exclusively🤨 This inter library loan arrived and I’m thinking of jumping in while I continue with the exquisite Mt. Chicago.
What’s your take on this one?!
Was this book demanding & elusive at times? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. In fact it’s growing on me by the moment. An astounding literary creation. Clarice guides & speaks to us through time as a fellow soul with an especially vibrant awareness. Like us all, unique to the billionth
Halfway through. Gosh, there’s a lot going on. Characters and characters. Stories within stories within sto…you get the picture. Mostly enjoyable. Thing is, and I hate even mentioning this, but the egregious number of editing errors is highly distracting.
45$ = entitled😗🥲
Reading Gass requires a period of persistence, but once surmounted, there is never a moment when you think of giving it anything less than your maximum complicity and attention, resulting in the type of reading that induces goosebumps and languid literary stupefaction..But, whoa
A captivating and smart Western, this one is right up there with Lonesome Dove in terms of quality, although still vastly disparate wrt content. Pynchon loved it too!!
Hip resurfacing was a cakewalk. Now, time to see what happens with this Hildebrandt family before I try and walk. So nice getting back to Franzen. Unbelievably readable. I can’t wait for the rest of this trilogy to be released. Then it’s time for Grimmish! Cheers y’all
Book mail 2.0.
I’ve been intrigued by this author for a while now. Reading some of her short stories, I think I’m in for a treat here. Let me know if you’ve got experience with Lispector! This is a brightass book!...
I’ll be reading this book for the month of April. Please consider joining me! Haven’t read a good war novel in quite some time and this gets heaps of praise.
Would love some takes on it.
Happy Easter y’all 😀
Ever since Grapes of Wrath knocked my socks off as a younger reader, I’ve slowly accumulated more Steinbeck but never got back to him. Picked this up for the cost of a coffee. 123 pages. How to resist that cover?!
Can anyone inform?
‘Public’ is a very tricky term these days. However, I’m outside of my home, so it’s good enough for my purposes. HBD Mr. Pynchon. Thanks for being a massive part of my literary journey. Hope all you nerds enjoy this special day wherever you are!

My 2023 reading has been spectacular thus far, and I simply cannot in good conscience give this anything less than 5⭐️, already my third this year. Brautigan is so refreshingly tender and light with this collection of tiny pieces. I can’t wait to explore his more well-known works
As I enter the 5th decade of my life, seems fitting that I enjoyed my greatest
#bookhaul
yet, during a glorious kid-free weekend in the mountains of Alberta with my better half. I drank whisky, smoked cigars, stuffed my face, and of course, read a lot. Thoughts on these titles?
77 pages into this today...holy crap is it a delightful blast to read!😃🤩
Really, really sincere and funny, even though it’s a book about writing a book. This narrator, who would in fact be Mario Levrero, is so human and believable it’s astounding..
I’ll be ripping through this
Although it demands a methodical and comprehensive approach, this has been worth the effort so far. The depraved, chaotic world is communicated very effectively and I continue to marvel at Eastern European writers as well as the work of those who Translate.
This was such a pleasant surprise!It swept me along as she describes her formative years and beyond, beautifully capturing a time and place. By turns bold and incisive, poetic and poignant, light and humerous, I was really very impressed with it all. Babitz was super talented.
Deftly daring and delightfully disturbing, this incredible novel was wholly absorbing. Diabolically despairing and desolate. Sentence by sentence brilliance throughout its dense delivery. A web of mysteriously dark literary allure, and I couldn’t escape it.
😧👏🏻🤩
#satantango
I continue to experience sublime literature this year.
The first one called ‘House-sitting’ is the best short story I’ve ever read. A complete masterclass in suspense and as close to perfect as it gets. His short zombie novel ‘A Questionable Shape’ was 🔥 too. Don’t sleep on Sims
Book mail birthday haul 3.0. Seeing this one all over the place and I’m powerless to resist
@nyrbclassics
particularly with a cover such as this. Plus the
@maxdaniellawton
translation.
Any quick takes on the novel proper get on in here
Saving the second half of Lispector for the end of the year (a delayed gratification thing). Now, all side reads are suspended while I focus my attention on the final sections of this stunning literary creation. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this arrested by a novel.
I can’t help but assert books onto people, anyone really, and it’s nice to get them back at some point, even though completion rate is abysmal. 0/4 in pic. Then I got thinking how many people I know and love would truly enjoy Mt.Chicago. Brilliant and perfectly challenging!
A thrilling story of lost innocence and survival at sea. I found the narrative to be a slow brew of intensity, insight and imagination that culminated in one of the better conclusions to a book I’ve read in quite some time. Not soon to be forgotten! Have you read this one?
Alexander Theroux is a genius. This book has far exceeded my considerable expectations, and after listening to
@george_salis
speaking about him, I hope to seek out his other work. A true shame this masterful novel doesn’t have a wider audience.
@BooksOSubstance
@beyondzeropod
I hope to cure the substantial reading hangover I’ve had since finishing ‘A Bended Circuity’ with this beautiful beast. A terrific premise, and I’ve heard nothing but good things. Thanks
@shelflifebooks
!
This has been on my radar for some time now. After hearing the captivating interviews and knowing how
@beyondzeropod
feels about it, I’m jumping right in. Positively flabbergasted that my library brought it in. Brand new, and feels like mine! Beautiful edition.
@reversediorama
While I gather my reflections on the sprawling, exasperating, brilliant, consciousness-jolting novel by Louis Armand, I’ve begun this one.
Has anyone read this? Amazing so far. Shades of Vonnegut/Murakami/ maybe..
Spot on mini review by
@madampsychosis
, who should write her own poetry I think. How amazing would it be if he were still with us...btw I’m not sure if you’ve ever shared thoughts on Pale King? Would love to hear it
Dang this book is a trip. As addictive as John Self is to cash and consumption, it’s propulsive yet playful narration is superbly executed. I had no clue about Amis.
I’m jumping in folks. This thing is massive and I’m slow as balls. Going to try and get the most out of this as possible, so I plan on marking it up a bit. Excited for the group component, whatever that looks like.
#Gaddis21
Friday pm haul. I’ve bought a second V. Woolf book. I’ve never read V. Woolf. I purchased IJ for the 5th time, intending again to bully it on friends/colleagues. I thought that giant Poe would simply be sexy on shelf. It’s becoming a concern. Do you have a

I understand now why Krasznahorkai gets the love. What a viscerally disturbing and decrepit world he creates here. It’s dense, demanding, and clearly rewards a slow reading. I’m caught in a web!
I’ll be forced to turn off The Masters for a while today! Happy Saturday folks
Reading Kundera is an experience unlike any other. It is so deeply affecting and tender that I simply marvel and pause to bask in the warm current of his perfectly elegant prose. It reaches parts of me that have never been acknowledged. He, and this book, are a true treasure...
