When you hear that "crime is surging" think about who benefits from this narrative and keep in mind that police enforce only some laws, against some people, in some places.
UPDATED THREAD: In 2021, we heard a lot about how police and prisons need more cash because "crime is surging." It's copaganda. I’ve made a new thread of threads with resources to help understand the issue and respond.

I can't wait to be vindicated and set free. At the same time it's absolutely terrifying bc I know it's going to be hard. Go from one world to another. One of violence and always on edge. To quiet, and slowness. Learn to speak, act, think different, again. 1 day at a time!

Absolutely! I've witnessed men who were charged with some serious stuff and be proven innocent but the damage was done, the stigma applied. Lost ,friends, family, businesses, way of life. A life destroyed. Some end in suicide. It's unjust and unfair.

Unfortunately we don't have decent prisons in South Carolina do we @BryanStirling @SCDCNews ? Must be nice! We get poor facilities, neglect, poor medical, can barely say mental health care, no programs or groups, no rehabilitation, cockroaches, spoiled food etc. etc.#prison #SCDC

According to AHSC & Dept of Admin Records Bryan Stirling, SCDC director salary: $250,000 (up $50,143, 25%) yet ac out half the summer. heat out part of winter. No programs, short staff, less than bare minimum medical, high recidivism rate #prisonreformnow

The state prisons are so short-staffed that many do not even get showers for days. The DOJ really needs to step in and take over these prisons that are so poorly run by individuals that do not have the training or experience to run a prison

There's another covid outbreak on my prison unit. DOC has plenty of N95 masks now, but prisoners will get a disciplinary infraction if they're caught with one. Why? Because N95s also protect us from their tear gas, which they still freely use during a respiratory pandemic.

I'm seeing a flood of very young people coming to prison, unprepared for life let alone the harshness of incarceration. Many felt empowered by having a gun on the street - now left with deciding to join a gang or picking up a shank for a new way of life. Both choices BAD.

Despite warnings from the Department of Justice going back to 1995, some police departments are still using hogtie restraints to subdue people.
