“Why don’t we see more tight curl + naturals just wearing their hair as it is?”
Is this what “as it is” looks like?
Because these 2 polished fros are cut to perfection, picked to perfection and we very sure they were sprayed with all kinds of Afro Sheen.
If your twist out looks like Lord Danbury’s then you need to read this 🧵 . Black Girl Curls is going to share the 5 Tips to Avoid Having a Twist Out that is Giving Lord Danbury.
Let’s not fail to recognize that the Afros of the 60s and 70s era were most certainly top tier and a lot of work. These fros were not just coming out of the shampoo and conditioner like this. This is the work of multiple hair pickings and patting throughout the day.
Spraying with all kinds of hair sprays. Along with a a nightly ritual plaiting or braiding of some kind so that picking in in the morning would be a breeze. A well done Afro is VERY high maintenance.
But we get it, styling can be hard when you don’t have inspo pics with curls that looks like yours. That’s why we created For The Curls & Culture, a digital digest where you can find a variety of inspo pics, expert advice and so much more
Viewing your natural hair as appropriate for all occasions is a huge mindset shift for a lot of people, we acknowledge that. That being said, this idea of it being “a lot” to maintain is rooted it *a lot* of misinformation —- you know we love a thread 🧵 so let’s break this down
When it comes down to how people wear their tight curl + natural hair in our year 2023 comes down to 2 things:
*How they want to look
*How much time do they want to spend weekly to maintain that look
While the fro of the 60s and 70s were both sign of the times both socially and politically it was also very much in fashion as well. Today’s tight curl + natural is literally learning everything about their hair while learning how they like to wear it.
It’s just about summer y’all and with that inevitably comes the question of what to do with your hair while you’re swimming. Sit tight! We have a few do and don’ts for you —
Free NATURAL HAIR CHALLENGE
Black Girl Curls wants to invite you all to join our Wash Your Damn Hair Challenge.
For the next 30 days we will get down to the absolute hair care basics as it pertains to tight + curl natural hair.
Dear Black Girl, your hair is not a burden.
Your hair does not require special concoctions, overnight and all day to do. Your hair is not broken, it does not need to be fixed and you don’t need a special product remedy all this.
In our behind the chair and online experience of working with tight curl + natural hair these are styles that seem to align with those who want to wear their hair in it’s natural state.
We’re not exactly sure who started this lie in the natural hair community but product selection should not be a trial and error process. You don’t have to keep experimenting with different ones to find out “what works for you”.
Getting your natural hair colored is a great way to spice up an already bomb cut and show off your individuality— that being said, there are a few mistakes we see quite often, let’s get into 5 of the most common 👉🏾🧵
UNPOPULAR NATURAL HAIR OPINION
Deep conditioning does not have to be done weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly if you don’t need it.
Deep Conditioner is the equivalent of cough medicine…we use it to treat challenges that we’re currently experiencing.
Y’all relying too much on products and not enough on technique and application. One of the biggest mistakes that naturals make is believing that products will fix all their hair problems.
Y’all missing the point. We’re not trying to tell y’all how to black. Simply making the point that these “protective styles” are not protecting your hair like you think they are if your hair isn’t in good health before going into one
By the way coconut oil don’t do shit for my hair but it works great on my daughter(it also protects her hair from chlorine from the pool).Castor oil works great on me but not good on my daughter hair texture….Point is…Find the right hair oil for you…I like grape seed oil also.
“I won’t let just anyone do my hair”
*Proceeds to allow an internet stranger with absolutely no receipts or credentials to guide on how to take care of said hair*
Hmmm…
Flat twisted my hair with leave-in (Keracare Naturals) and styling foam (IC Fantasia styling foam). Sat underneath my hood eyed for
45 minutes and took my twist down this morning.
How many days do you think this twist out will last before I turn into Lord Danbury?
3) Let’s skip the LOC or LCO (leave-in, oil, cream) method all together and let’s choose either a cream or foam with hold to set and style our twist with. Hair styling involves using the appropriate styler with hold and the LOC method just doesn’t do that
But all these styles? 2 hours *max*. Is that not comparable to the time you spend on these other styles because you think your natural hair is too much to maintain?
“What are the naturals doing at the gym?”
We can’t even count how many times we’ve seen this question both in our inboxes and on social media so let’s talk about it- A mini thread 🧵
How many hours do you spend getting your hair washed, blowed out & pressed? Or even if you decide to “throw” a wig on, how much time is spent manipulating & “customizing” that wig, braiding your hair down, touching up the hair line, etc before you feel comfortable wearing it out?
@midsydHQ
The last time we let our hair go free without product or doing anything to it was during quarantine. I (the blonde) rehashed my hair the following day and it took me almost an hour to detangle. I typically detangle my hair in 20 minutes.
4) Let the twist dry THOROUGHLY THROUGHOUT! Black Girl Curls suggest sitting under a hood dryer for at least 30 minutes and let the hair cure for 24-36 hours before taking the twist apart. In order to change the form of the hair it needs to be able to dry completely in that form.
Your answer to both those questions is probably “enough”. So if we’re willing to spend hours on our head anyway, why not invest that same time into what’s already on it?
#4c
is starting to become the overall standard for classifying Black Hair. For the record Black Hair doesn’t all fit into the imaginary 4C category….and unfortunately those who identify with 4C can’t give a finite answer on how to actually identify it.
Do get your hair soaking wet with water prior to getting in the pool, this will actually allow the hair to become swollen with water while keeping chlorinated water out.
One of the most misused words in the tight curl + natural hair lexicon is texture.
Texture = the diameter of an individual strand.
Curl pattern = the shape/form of an individual’s curls. (This one is as important as knowing the color of your eye).
“Wash day” doesn’t exist over here, only wash hour. Regardless of hair length or density it should not take a whole day (or several hours) just to wash your hair.
The gag is, when you have a good baseline understanding of you hair, how it behaves and the “why” and “how” of using products, tied with good technique — it won’t take y’all nearly as long as you think or are used to it taking.
3 things you can do to totally avid retwisting your hair every night. BTW this is Carrie and she arrived in this 7 day old twist out to the salon. All she did was fluff and go every morning.
When we ask “is it that you don’t feel confident in your natural hair” we don’t just mean the way it looks when you wear it. Do you feel confident doing it? Better yet, do you feel competent doing it?
1) Make sure your hair is throughly cleansed, conditioned and detangled. It is very important to start with a clean canvas when we are setting and styling our hair.
Natural and relaxed hair both require maintenance, both require time and money. And everyone should be able to wear their hair however it’s right to fit how they want to show up in the world.
There are a lot of shampoos on the market, formulated in many ways. The issue is y’all don’t know how to look at the way a product is formulated. assume they all do the same thing & wonder why you’re not getting the results you want. You have to know why you’re using what you are
Y’all are always looking for the perfect product to get your curls the way you envision them but curls don’t come in a bottle. Those “custards” and “creams” marketed to you are not doing what you think they are.
So many tight curlies + naturals have tried countless things for their hair that have actually not been the most beneficial. Proper hair care means you’re cleansing with shampoo on a regular basis, using water soluble products and steering far away from raw oils and butters.
5)If you would like definition from root to end, opt for a flat twist instead. Flat Twisting allows us to create definition that goes from root to end while minimizing “puffy roots”
We have created a curated list of products that you can find in our Wash Your Damn Hair Styling + Product Guide. We also explain to you how to use them and include tutorials on how to use them. It’s the show and tell of natural hair straight from practicing pros
2) Learn the proper technique and application for achieving a well set twist. Executing a proper twist will allow for you to achieve the desired form of this manipulated curl that you desire
Before making the decision to relax your hair, it’s important to consider all the variables. We sat down with
@curljones_ronij
to talk about relaxed vs natural hair and the full video can be found here on YouTube
Are you a tight curl + natural using oil to…
-remedy your dry scalp?
-address an itchy scalp?
-seal moisture into your hair?
-moisturize your hair?
-give your hair shine?
One of the most challenging task for tight curl + naturals is the ability to find products that “work.”
With Amazon Prime Day upon us Black Girl Curls wanted to help you all out while taking advantage of some ahhhhhmazing deals.
As we’ve said before and will keep saying, your hair care routine should not be a “trial an error” process. It’s much more “one size” than y’all realize.
Are y’all getting relaxers bc they’re genuinely easier or are you getting them bc all the misinformation on the internet has lead you to believe that caring for natural hair is a difficult multistep process.
If you would like to learn more about getting twist outs that are not giving Lord Danbury please visit the following link and sign up to our email list to get our freebie.
Do rinse your hair after you’re done in the pool. If you’re planning to be in the pool for a consecutive number of days, we recommend co-washing daily.
Not a week has gone by since I’ve been showing my hair on this here internet (since 2015) where someone hasn’t either commented on how my hair looks dry or that it looks damaged from the color.
Dear

community you don’t have to avoid heat. Before we dive into let’s first understand the difference between indirect heat vs direct heat.
But we want you to be armed w all the info you can be when making that choice + if you think relaxers are easier bc you’re under the impression you need a full day to wash your hair + a magic potion of oils, herbs + spices to make it healthy, you might not have all the info

When hair is healthy and hydrated it will stretch up to 40% beyond its normal length while wet, then return to its natural position. So that shrinkage you experience is a sign your hair is healthy and hydrated!
“Everybody’s hair is different”
This seems to be a popular sentiment amongst many tight curl + naturals
But what exactly makes one head of hair different from the next? Because curl patterns ain’t the only thing different…
If you believe the difficulty of caring for your hair is directly related to the tightness of your coils then we gotta have a discussion about your mindset friend
Another thing that is not happening with the oils? They aren’t doing a thing to protect your hair from chlorine in the pool. This blog post is a short read on 3 ways to do that
