Hello friend & welcome!👋🏾 You've made it to the Professional Haircare side of Twitter for those of us with tighter curls & coils. Want to know where to start?
Here's a Table of Contents 🧵:
@flashmobjay
Scientifically it does neither but you’re welcome to continue enjoying your cold water of course. My original tweet is subject matter expert information and not hair chat up for discussion, debate, or agreement.
No oils, butters, grease, food masks, overnight deep conditioning, mud masks, pre-poo, aloe vera leaves, rice/tea rinses, or air drying/drying without heat were utilized in the making of this video.
It’s not enough to just stop using oils and butters to simplify your haircare routine, save time, and start seeing amazing, juicy curl results. Let’s go over the basics 🧵 👇🏾
“Dry” scalp isn’t treated with oil. Putting oil on the scalp is more likely to feed the bacteria & yeast that is naturally occurring on the skin ultimately exacerbating issues like itchiness or flakes.
I have two weeks to raise $25K or I have to shut down my salon indefinitely.
If you’ve been on the fence about finally booking an appointment to discover what’s possible for your curls - now is the time. Because any time after might be too late.
Can we also discuss the “I had waist length hair when I was younger” narrative. Not to pick on this person specifically - just that this tweet reminded me to share: keep in mind you were shorter when you were younger! Getting to your waist now can mean more inchessssss 😭
I had waist length hair until the age of 13 when I got my first haircut & have never been able to grow it that long again. I care about health too much to let scraggly ends stay on my head.
@chzandcrackers
You have it partially correct. Cooler temps to keep color vibrant longer so you don’t rinse off dye molecules more quickly in warmer temps = faster fading. Temp has no effect on cuticle “opening” or “closing”
@LateefSaka
Honestly I was shocked to learn just how much people do with locs - if it’s already big hair they’re going after they don’t mind the bigness of it all
“Leave-in conditioner” is a tricky term. Why?
Because it’s not actually continuing to condition your hair just because it was “left in”
It’s actually just a styling product with no hold.
“I can’t believe my hair could do this all along!!” is a pretty common comment we curl stylists hear.
So many curly naturals, especially those convinced they’re “4c” have no idea what’s possible for their hair with a bit of shampoo, learned technique, & a whole lot of water!
No need to wear any particular style other than what makes everyone most comfortable. The key is to shampoo and condition the chlorine out same day following getting out of the pool!
Black Parents, in honor of The Little Mermaid coming out, let your babies get swimming lessons, get in the pool, and get their hair wet. Research good protective hairstyles and how to care for their hair after the pool, but let them swim and emulate their new Disney Princess❤️
I have stated multiple times that if SHAMPOO is not hitting your hair and scalp a minimum of once every 5-7 days then you don’t have the room to step to a 8.5x11 about their legs
Oil doesn’t grow hair. It doesn’t make hair grow. It doesn’t have the ability to.
In fact, sad but true, applying oil to the scalp can actually increase chances of developing hair loss.
Oil does not hydrate hair.
Oil does not “lock” moisture in.
Oil does not hydrate hair.
Oil does not “lock” moisture in.
Oil does not hydrate hair.
Oil does not “lock” moisture in.
@c0kahina
Not to mention the occurrences of black nepotism in Hollywood are limited especially from her time period... to be the child of a celeb and actually make your own legacy is like twice exceptional rarity
“Shrinkage” isn’t the devil y’all think it is!! It’s actually a sign that your hair is healthy!!
The actual devil in this case is white supremacy for making y’all feel your hair is less than because it’s not a certain length. Length really isn’t everything.
“Y’all are like a cult”
If reducing wash day to wash hour, no longer fearing your hair, spending 10 minutes to detangle, feeling confident in your curls and excited about the results you know you’re going to be able to achieve consistently is a cult then… yeah sure I guess 🤷🏾♀️
Never before have I been so obsessed with my own work that I can’t help but to view it over and over again. And I don’t mean just this head of curls… I’m absolutely in love with what I do! 😩
Y’all ready for this ✨Curl Transformation✨?!
Water, shampoo, conditioner, water-based botanical gels, a bit of heat from a hard hooded dryer and the skills to know how putting all that together gets results like these. That’s it! 😏
@acuragvrl
@tinashehive
This is the misinformation we used to operate from. Turns out washing a minimum of once per week is what’s best for Black hair!
What I was up to today in the hours I wasn’t rapidly trying to respond and keep up with the ongoing conversations. I thank everyone for their patience with me. She loved it! 🙏🏾🥰
Can we start a thread of the hardest Youtube Natural Hair University myths it took for us to let go?
I would share one but... I struggled with so many of the terrible "techniques" that I was really ready to listen to a pro when I found them. Maybe you have one to share?
@MzKaraReads
Bc unfortunately a lot of stylists have been impacted by youtubeU and, particularly in the case of stylists doing primarily black hair, have forgotten a lot of their cosmo school lessons/believe they don’t apply to black hair.
Step 6: Air drying will lead to unintended frizz and shortened style longevity. Using heat to dry is 🔑! Heat “sets” the style into place. Hard hooded dryers or blow dryers w/ diffuser attachment have very low risk of heat damage when used correctly.
Natural/Curly hair is:
Wedding Hair
Graduation Hair
Vacation Hair
Holiday Hair
Professional Hair
Courtroom Hair
Photoshoot Hair
Awards Show Hair…
The list really is endless
@EcheXCVI
Nobody says natural hair is bad. But can you go to events with your natural hair? An envent that you have a function to run?
You can be at your natural look when at home but for an occasion, look your best
“You have a tone”
I’m a neurodivergent Virgo Black woman surviving in America and I state things matter of factly with a dry sense of humor. Hitting the unfollow, mute, block button is always an option 🤷🏾♀️
Reminiscing about my time in paradise this morning. Barely a couple of weeks ago but I’m ready to go back. This is what an island vacation without “vacation braids” looks like.
Step 1: cleanse with a formulated shampoo.
There isn’t an “alternative” just the way we don’t have an alternative for dish soap. Hair is dirty after a week of living. The same way we cleanse every other part of our body, hair and scalp need shampoo.
The practice of oiling our scalps in the US was primarily started as a method of bug repellent while we were enslaved. The purported benefits of oil on the scalp often aren’t scientifically/medically proven.
Shampoo is meant to be used not only on your scalp but also on the lengths of your hair.
What we’re not doing is “the soap runs down my legs” version of haircare over here.
The irony for me when the lashing out begins is just how often people in our community/demographic will damn near fight to the death about the importance of hygiene… as long as it’s below the eyebrows 😩
It’s disrespectful af to bring your 3 month old unwashed hair to a stylist and expect them to wash it for you.
Yes, we do wash hair but personal hygiene is still personal responsibility.
“Why do product companies sell hair oil then if it’s not useful?”
Because capitalism doesn’t care if it actually does what it claims as long as you’ll continue buying it. 💸🤑
Your hair may not be naturally shiny.
This doesn’t mean there is something wrong with your hair.
This doesn’t mean there’s something that needs to be corrected.
This doesn’t mean your hair isn’t healthy.
And there’s no product you need to change it.
That’s just your hair!
Castor oil is NOT growing your hair!!
It’s not “sealing in the moisture”.
It’s not moisturizing.
Sure it might be lubricating but there is a such thing as overkill and castor oil is certainly it.
It isn’t going to soothe your “dry scalp”
It isn’t going to prevent breakage…
Are you someone that thought when you first heard about no oils/no butters “that’ll never be me. It’s oils & butters for me” and now there isn’t even a leave-in in your bathroom anymore? 👀
Dehydrated hair is more prone to severe breakage.
How does hair become dehydrated?
There are lots of ways but waiting longer than a week to shampoo and condition is the main culprit currently destroying so-called “4c” hair
Step 4: Before rinsing the conditioner out use a tool (I prefer the Felicia Leatherwood brush) to gently detangle working from the ends and going up to the scalp. You’re removing shed hair that would cause tangles sticking around.
Step 2: condition with intention
Doesn’t need to be “deep” conditioner. They’re really not all that deep anyways. Rinse out conditioners these days are solid but the most important 🔑 is to not sit around for 30mins, 1hr, 3hrs or more w/ it sitting on the hair.
On average, it takes about 2 years to grow a full head of hair.
No oil (butter, cream, grease, lipids, vaseline (as in Blue Magic), essential oils, [insert scalp serum or food concoction here], onion juice, tea brews) required.
One day we’ll have a long chat about curl dysphoria and how wash & gos doesn’t and won’t “work” for many that genuinely dislike their natural curl pattern.
- a hydrate and define, and styling foam for styles that require manipulation like twists or a twist out.
Apply appropriate styling product to the bare hair for best results. Gel(s) should be applied on soaking wet hair. Styling foam can be applied as you do the style.
Whew muting this one now cause I can’t keep up. Try not to take advice from non-professionals who only know their own and their family’s hair. Have a good night y’all! ✨
Step 2 (cont’d): Conditioner should be worked into the hair similar to the way we’re constantly working with shampoo. Smooth it down your strand and add water while you’re doing it.
Share two selfies: what your curls looked like following Natural Hair YT. And what your curls look like shampooing, conditioning, styling & drying once a week.
Can someone tell me why natural hair influencers don’t get questioned on the “information” they share the way that Professionals are often grilled on scientific hygiene basics?
Listen if you use Olaplex and it’s not hitting like you need to use Aphogee. That line is the BEST hair care line idc it will transform any damage and keep your hair strong AF
There isn't a product sold on the shelves (except maybe Rogaine) that's going to grow back your edges.
Best bet it to see a dermatologist that specializes in hair loss. Bonus points if they're Black
And please, for the love of everything, do say Black if you’re unsure of how we identify. A Black person isn’t always African American. I am not African American.
Never ever ask Black ppl why we’re adamant about being called Black instead of being lumped in with all non white ppl… This is how “people of color” treat Black folks.
