This paper highlights some recent security vulnerabilities in sequencers & directly related software (here, with a focus on ONT devices). The intersection of sequencing tech & security seems under-developed! https://t.co/7RHUAfrwWb ONT’s CVE guidelines: https://t.co/nMdGurXCHw

Were I a politician who wanted to engineer recurring dividends for US citizens, I'd simply propose massively increasing federal research & slightly modifying licensing conditions on e.g. SBIR & related awards. This both maintains US competitivensss and generates massive return.

We're not planning to have any more children, but if we did, I'd propose to my wife that we name them after an AVX512 instruction, like `VPCLMULQDQ`. That would be a way to identify other parents with whom I'd actually want to be friends :).

This was the worse option. They should have forced them to kill this filibuster. Then, it's pinned on the GOP in perpetuity, AND they can use that precedent to fix the absolutely and completely broken court in 3 years. Oh wait, they'd need a spine for that... too bad.

Been saying all along, there was only ever two ways this would end: (1) Dems cave (2) GOP eliminates filibuster Some were under the impression that there was a third door where Donald Trump makes major concessions on policy and his governance practices. There wasn't

Did you know that 30 years ago, on Oct. 10 1995, Green Day released an album with a song β€œNo Pride” that they specifically wrote about the democrats caving to GOP demands 30 years hence and inflicting the longest govt shutdown all for naught?

Holy crap; the panda nanos were in stock for < 24 hours! I was able to snag 2 boxes before they went back out of stock only because I had reddit notifications enabled and someone was kind enough to point it out to me on Reddit. I'd already done my check that morning!

This is so incredibly dumb. This is the government giving us back a tiny amount of the $ we lost by paying for the tariffs in the first place. Also, why not put this directly to the national debt? Cheap political trick because of SCOTUS case.

Yet, time and again, even the best GCs have proven problematic in high performance or long running applications. There is a chasm between theory and practice here, and a reason that there are still classes of applications where GCs never appear in top performing applications.

Garbage Collection Can Be Faster Than Stack Allocation by Andrew Appel (1986) Quite an interesting read, showing that the GC phases can perform better with enough heap. Sometimes, revisiting papers from history sheds light on current possibilities, yielding incremental ideas.

Watson was a noted racist, anti-semite, and sexiest. He also vehemently disliked Irish people. He also chose to be an ass to people he disfavored for no reason. OTOH, it is ahistorical and simply false that he "stole the DNA idea" from Franklin. That is not even remotely correct.

You don't need chemo, just don't get cancer. You don't need to know self-defense, just avoid unsavory characters. You don't need a compiler at all, just write the machine code yourself, like a "real programmer".

Damnit, Michael, he was matter of factly racist. What, at all, does that have to do with his scientific contribution? The inventor of PCR was an HIV/AIDS denialist. Nothing stops someone who made a great scientific discovery from being a horrible person, it having wrong views.

Government needs to stop intervening in the lives of citizens in many of the ways it currently intervenes. On the other hand, there is no compelling evidence that God ever intervenes, or ever has. This calls into question God's very existence. Government, OTOH, definitely exists.

No, this is not what will change culture. People being able to afford to live and provide their kids with a reasonable middle class life is what will change culture, not ultra-rich celebrities complaining about culture or counter-culture.
