The tool ranks 36 countries using 42 AI-specific indicators. It is among the most comprehensive indices of its kind. Our key finding: the U.S. currently leads in AI, followed by China in a distant second and the United Kingdom in third.

The AI Index is launching a new project, AI Judicata, led by Elif Kiesow Cortez and Nestor Maslej. AI Judicata will provide the community with an easy-to-use, curated open-access database on relevant AI legal cases in the United States.

Nearly a decade ago, @FrankPasquale coined the phrase "black-box society" to refer to the way tech platforms were growing ever more opaque as they increased their influence. Now we accept this secrecy when, in the age of AI, we need to resist it the most.

The top ranked company, Meta, scores a 54%. The mean score is just 37%. All developers have room for improvement across all subdomains.
