@scottshapiro So bc you have no effective way of differentiating bt the two, you're asking users to reduce their own security practices. Same vibe as when bank fraud detection asks for all sorts of invasive info & gets impatient with you when you won't furnish it & primes you to get scammed.

@scottshapiro I travel a lot and am often on insecure wifi! You're essentially saying "We have no other way of identifying you as 'not a hacker' unless you're willing to expose yourself because hackers don't do that, so pls expose yourself". What's the difference between this and "You don't.

Coinbase is trying to get people onchain with one hand and making life difficult for those who actually use it on the other. @Coinbase KYC has been harassing me since October, threatening to close my account if I don't prove the source of my funds with screenshots of my salary

Today gives us a great illustration to understand what a "surround vote" is!. HoleΕ‘ky went through the Pectra fork today and a bug caused some execution clients to vote for an invalid block. They didn't know it was invalid, but Erigon & Reth did - these two execution clients kept.
@nixorokish Just before this causes confusion: voting on an invalid block won't get you slashed, but operators will have to force their validators to vote on the good chain after having voted with an invalid source (this is slashable) in order to justify the good chain and save the rest.

PSA: You can't both ridicule the idea of raspberry pi validators AND advocate for 1 ETH validators. If we want 1 ETH validators, we need to lower the cost of the hardware that validators are run on. The cheapest you can run hardware at home right now is ~$800. A @dappnode costs.

1000000% the best part of this talk was when someone walked up to me afterwards and said .~"I'm a genesis staker and I've been feeling a little like we were being too idealistic and maybe it isn't worth it to solo stake with all these big orgs coming online so thank you for this".
Are solo stakers valuable for censorship resistance? . @nixorokish discusses how solo stakers fundamentally care about the value of the network's at the #CensorshipWTF

The quality and ethos of people working on Ethereum is unprecedented.
TLDR: I dropped the EigenLayer advisorship, left the ultra sound team, and made other changes to double down on neutrality and focus on L1 research and coordination. In September I let go of the EigenFoundation advisorship. I want to apologise to the Ethereum community and EF.

There's a LOT of different research & development in the pipeline for Ethereum protocol changes and differing perspectives on how existing issues should be handled or prioritized. And async comms can make progress slooooow. π§΅[ 1 / 10 ].
Before @devcon, core devs had an L1 R&D workshop. For (I think?) the first time, we compiled notes on the sessions and made them public. Just pushed them to the ethereum/pm repo π.

Decentralization is the key feature of blockchains. The purpose of the majority of research proposals rn is how to maintain that decentralization. If you're advocating for sacrificing it for efficiency, it's probably bc you expect to be on the winning end of that centralization.
@drjasper_eth This is going to happen anyways. MaxEB is the least controversial initial change. Long term, SSF already implicitly accepts, and rainbow staking responds, to the reality that solo staking is simply not sustainable. Smaller still big val set is fine.

this is a huge step toward transparency and the numbers actually surprise me - this report states that coinbase manages 11.4% of the stake, which is much lower than previously estimated. it's been very difficult to identify coinbase validators because of their staking methods,.

Look y'all. Besu had an issue earlier this month. It wasn't a big deal cuz they're ~4% of the network. Nethermind has an issue today. It's not a big deal cuz they're ~10% of the network. Client bugs can happen IN ANY CLIENT. Geth could be next. It would be a big deal.

The data has shown that it's safe & we're only at 34% signalling - we need 16% more for it to count! . If the team that's managing your stake hasn't moved their gas limit up - they're either not paying attention or their engineering team needs some motivation. Ask your provider!.
No more 'Mr Nice Guy' about the gas limit increase from me - time to publicly call out the larger providers to increase their gas limit to at least 36 million!. @binance @stakefish @BitcoinSuisseAG @upbitglobal @krakenfx @Bitstamp @P2Pvalidator @Mantle_Official @Figment_io.

Mercenary types framing values of decentralization as "luxury beliefs" in favor of scaling for narrative points is what ultimately kills the value of the chain. I don't think they even know it. This view is so short term. Same feeling as optimizing for quarter-over-quarter profit.
We can no longer afford to eat the cost of these luxury beliefs. Solo staking in a place where you do not have appropriate bandwidth imposes an externality on the network. If Ethereum doesn't win, the world looks much more dystopian than a world where Ethereum sacrifices a few.

@christine_dkim @MaxResnick1 because he's not a critic in good faith - he's made his short career out of trolling and leaving ethereum. the overwhelming sentiment coming out of ethdenver this year was exhaustion at an all-time-high "pay for play" vibe and outrage-farmer maxing. max's game falls right into.

Of *known* entities, Coinbase's shift by the end of Mar to 50/50 Geth / Nethermind gets us below 66%. HOWEVER - since not all entities have reported, we could still potentially be at ~70% if all non-reporting entities are 100% Geth. This is GREAT progress but we have more to go!
We told you we were working towards diversifying the execution clients on our Ethereum validators. Today, we're excited to provide an update!. This week weβve begun rolling out support for @NethermindEth β with support for @ErigonEth close behind!.

Roman's case is still underfunded and it has implications for the entire industry . If we can fund fun projects, rugpulls, and memecoin, we should be able to fund something that defends our industry's right to exist. Donation address is in the thread.
Roman and Alexey's cases will set precedent for every single developer building on crypto rails. We cannot let these charges stand. Holding developers responsible for the actions of third parties is cruel and unjust. Roman and Alexey deserve freedom, nothing less.

we need more write-ups like this after forks! This is fantastic; it filters out the technical details & tells us what happened in plain language. It's so unique to this ecosystem that we see issues arise from anyone being able to read dev convo as upgrades are being rolled out.
I wrote up the story of the Pectra incident on Sepolia, its an interesting story about edge cases, coordination and an attacker who swooped in and made our lives much harder!. Check it out (4min read): .

@AyaMiyagotchi I'm sorry that the CT mob mentality has been unleashed on you, Aya. Nonprofit ED work is drudgery, compliance, & not the glamour the community wants it to be. Ethereum has led by those w/o a desire to be a main character & the current narrative doesn't touch on the value of that.
