Good thread by @BobGreensteinDC noting that spending on poverty, while imperfect, has had a real and positive impact.
@MattBruenig & I have had our share of policy disagreements over the years, and @KelseyTuoc raises some important issues, but this thread focuses on what I see as some gaps and misinterpretations in her article & response to Matt, including the issue @jdcmedlock raised here🧵1/12.

The UN humanitarian coordinator, @TFletcher, is appropriately blunt about the Gaza Famine that has now been officially declared: "It is a famine that we could have prevented, if we had been allowed. Yet food stacks up at borders because of systematic obstruction by Israel. It is.

Joao Silva is a brilliant photographer, and he shows he's a brilliant writer as well as he returns to the Afghan village where during the war he lost both his legs to a landmine. A beautiful essay about the power of peace: Bravo, Joao!.

Thank you, Finland, for standing up for the rule of law and for the ICC. It's one imperfect tool to create accountability for atrocities, and it also provides a dollop of deterrence. Far better than no law at all.
Finland deeply regrets the new sanctions imposed by the US against the judges and deputy prosecutors of the International Criminal Court. The ICC must be able to fulfill its mandate effectively, without restrictions. Judicial and prosecutorial independence of the ICC is crucial.

Senator @amyklobuchar learned that a video clip of her was going viral. So she clicked on it and saw her face and her voice saying absurd and vulgar things she had never said. It was a deepfake. In @nytopinion, she calls for tougher policing of them:

Deepfakes are getting more realistic, and more difficult to stop. Congress needs to take steps now.
