The football world forgot about Qwan'tez Stiggers. More than once.
Now, after a journey fit for a major motion picture, he's ready to show that world who he is.
And remind all of us why it's never too late.
New today on
@TheAthleticNFL
Harbaugh asked if he has thoughts on the trash talking from Ohio State, notably in recent years:
‘Some people were born on third and think they hit a triple.’
Oh my. Harbaugh is back.
Dan Campbell sent reserve OL Dan Skipper to the podium before any player today — after the first W.
Skipper’s been a PSquad guy here for a long time, does whatever’s asked. Played OG for the first time today and is now here to tell his tale.
The Detroit Lions, folks.
This is the stuff I think about when I think about Kobe Bryant on a basketball court.
Hitting two free throws with a torn Achilles in a regular season game because his team was down a bucket and they needed him.
Lakers won by two. Talents like this stay with us forever.
Lions HC Dan Campbell:
"I wanted this job. ... Bad. ... This place has been kicked, it's been battered, it's been bruised. I can give you coachspeak all day long, none of that matters -- you've had enough of that shit.
"This team is going to take on the identity of this city."
tell ya what … have been in stadiums, arenas, domes and buildings all over this fine land and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an in-game hype spot quite like when the Lions play Lose Yourself and cut to a living breathing Eminem in the stands as ppl sing
Five Sweet 16's for a program that once looked like it may never make it back.
John Beilein's been Michigan's GOAT for a minute. He further established that today.
"He's one of the best human beings I've ever been around."
Michigan was the most physically dominant team in America this season and the most consistent at doing what it does best.
I don't think it was particularly close.
Urban Meyer sitting there listening to Ohio State fans chanting for him to replace the guy he hand-picked to carry on his legacy is fascinating television
Sewell and Skipper don’t have to report, Decker does. All three went to the Referee in what felt like an attempt to disguise who was really eligible. Ultimately player has responsibility to report and Referee has responsibility to announce it and alert the defense.
Noah Furbush wins Michigan's top senior student-athlete award but was unable to accept in person because he's currently on an aerospace engineer job interview involving missiles.
Probably the most Noah Furbush-thing ever.
That's 233-pound Devin Bush Jr. stacking and shedding 319-pound C Tyler Biadasz, a frosh All-American last season.
Everyone wondered if he'd be able to do this in college. Not only is he doing it (in addition to his sideline-to-sideline play) he's also flexing on guys.
Patterson says he called Charles Woodson to ask him if it’d be OK to wear his number.
He told him ‘Wear it with pride and know what you’re wearing it for ... be a leader.’
Dylan Larkin grew up in Michigan and just had Steve Yzerman declare him captain of the Detroit Red Wings.
As a person who also grew up in Michigan, that has to rank prettyyyyyyyyyy high on the old surreal chart.
4-star OL Trevor Keegan commits to Michigan.
Dad was excited, accidentally swore like 3 times on the live mic. Pretty outstanding.
Midwestern football at its finest.
I mean, pretty simple: Michigan's a tougher, better-coached football team top-to-bottom. Every spot.
That sounds crazy based on what this series was like five years ago ... but that's what has happened here.
On Shea Patterson: Brown said during the MSU game Patterson came to him after a UM fumble ‘He got in my face and said ‘get me the ball back, I’ll fix it.’ ‘ And he did.
Trevor Keegan, Zak Zinter's best buddy, just went on the field and hugged Zinter's parents.
Then Michigan runs one right off his back for a TD.
Can't make that one up.
Moritz Wagner unpacked his bags for John Beilein. He gave Michigan all he had.
He's grown up now. He made an adult decision. It was a no-brainer.
He's ready.
John Beilein: ‘Don’t worry about me. I want to win a national championship, but this is (part of) why I coach. To be in that locker room with those kids. Because this is life.’
Well Jim Harbaugh just doubled down on calling Michigan State "bush league." Pulled out a piece of paper and read an old quote from Mark Dantonio: "It's not a product of the team. It's a product of the program."
John Beilein's team is No. 2 nationally and 17-0. He was on 97.1 this morning:
"Today's practice will still have 30 minutes of just dribbling the ball, passing the ball and individual instruction. Not about plays."
The fundamental foundation of this whole deal.
I’m back.
As of today, I’m senior writer/columnist for The Athletic Detroit. My focus: Football. Michigan football, Michigan State football, Detroit Lions football.
In time, that scope will expand to every sport we care about here.
So, let’s roll.
Four years ago Brady Hoke issued a public apology after Michigan drove a tent stake into the Spartan Stadium grass.
On Saturday, Jim Harbaugh called MSU "bush league" after further sod damage was done.
Things change, eh?
Wagner just came over to apologize to Bill Raftery for breaking his glasses.
Congratulated Grant Hill on the Hall of Fame.
They wished him luck in the national title game.
Personal news:
Today is my last day at the Free Press. Want to thank everyone there. The Freep is an important institution, I wish it nothing but continued success.
I’m not going far, though. You’re not rid of me. I will share my new adventure with you all soon.
Stay tuned.
Accidental lying isn’t a thing.
And telling a domestic violence victim you, per an investigation, failed to help: ‘I’m sorry we’re in this situation’ doesn’t work.
None of it works.
Probably the worst half of football Michigan's had under Jim Harbaugh. You could argue maybe at PSU in 2017 or second half at Ohio State last year.
But either way: This is the Big Ten opener in year five. And Michigan looks completely overwhelmed.
Zavier Simpson has 9 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists and a steal with no turnovers.
He was also ready to throw hands with a 6-foot-9, 270-pound guy.
AKA: Another Tuesday evening for Zavier Simpson.
Harbaugh says they'll use a fullback in short-yardage and goal line. But they want him on the field more. So Mason is going to play defensive line this year, too.
Dan Campbell — a former Lion himself, survivor of 0-16 — on what it would mean to the city of Detroit to push this team into the playoffs:
‘This is why I wanted to be here.’
unless there’s something I’m totally unaware of here, the officials completely bungled that call and the MNF crew doubling down on it as a ‘three-way violation’ was even worse my god guys
So I thought Michigan’s defense would make things competitive at Nova tonight. But I guess I underestimated John Beilein’s ability to get the offense going?
Which, I mean ... that was dumb of me.
Brandon Peters spent 4 quarters listening to Michigan State fans heckle him as a ‘Michigan reject.’
“They got what they deserved.”
As for the team on the field? Mark Dantonio’s group looked rudderless. And no one’s going to wish this stuff away.
Second week of pads in Allen Park:
Aidan Hutchinson is making Penei Sewell work way way harder than this time a week ago. Just knocked him off his feet a bit with a punch in pass rush that Sewell noted. Good stuff today from 97 and 58.
Michigan answered the bell here. Never panicked. Team was well prepared offensively. Ready to play football and never took its foot off the gas.
Took The Boat for a joy ride and then burned it. Period.
Source tells The Athletic Michigan and Jim Harbaugh are close to finalizing a five-year deal -- expected base salary is $4 million. With incentives, he could get it back to $8 million. Buyout is expected to be low.
Harbaugh hasn't signed. Is expected to soon.
This used to be the time of year when folks patted John Beilein on the back for reloading a team that lost a ton.
But Juwan Howard, his staff and the roster probably need six or seven pats on the back.
Michigan looks totally bought in and connected early. Impressive.
Dan Campbell pretty clear just now. Says he and Brad Holmes’ vision has always been to have a team who can compete for the NFC North by 2023.
That is still the plan. By the way.
When Jabrill Peppers couldn't go in the '16 Orange Bowl, a true frosh Metellus found out he was in minutes before kick. First start. Out of nowhere. He hung in there wire to wire against a talented Florida State team. Never blinked. Always got better. Wouldn't bet against him.
Dan Campbell says he and Brad Holmes expected to compete for the division by year 3 when they took over.
In Jan. 2021 Detroit was in cap hell, with a QB who wanted out, no playmakers on offense and less on defense. That was a lofty goal imo.
The players who built the Michigan basketball program you’ll watch in the Final Four on Saturday didn’t popularize baggy shorts.
They were the original John Beilein guys.
And they’re pretty proud right now.
A team that hasn’t independently scheduled a non-con road game in more than a decade loses to a near 30-point dog at home in November.
Ya hate to see it.
In case you were wondering ...
... David Blough has indeed reminded the slew of new Ohio State Lions (including Jeff Okudah) about the time he threw for 378 and 3 TDs against the Buckeyes at Purdue in 2018.
Rashan Gary on Harbaugh's radio show, asked about the NFL Draft:
"I don't know. I'm just focused on the season right now, trying to finish out strong with my brothers and bring back a national championship to Ann Arbor and our Michigan fans."
Josh Gattis' Michigan offense finished the 12-game regular season No. 20 nationally in SP+ efficiency.
If that holds through the bowl, that'll be the best number of Jim Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan to date.
