The UK government has narrowed its shortlist of technologies competing in its flagship Small Modular Reactor (SMR) competition to four candidates. NuScale and EDF are out.

"Today, there was a lot of comparison with the US. Kazakhstan has good reasons to switch to #nuclear. The growing costs for #datacenters can significantly affect our #energy hunger and energy balance." said Dinara Ermakova of UC Berkeley and Strategic Analyst at SMR Startup.

Togzhan Seifullina, Director of the Kazakhstan's Nuclear Society said at the NNWI Central Asia event today that "a center for explanatory work on #nuclearenergy has been open for 10 years already... I urge you not to stop after the referendum and work with the public."

Banu Nurgazieva, President of the Civil Alliance of Kazakhstan explained that pre-referendum information about #nuclear power and raising awareness among the locals began very late. "But if the quality is up to par then the support of the population will be positive." she added.

Director of the Atomic Energy and Industry Department of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Energy, Gumar Sergazin, said that "the construction of a #nuclear power plant is very important for #Kazakhstan, and that preparations for the #referendum on 6 October 2024 are underway".
