To seize the CCS opportunity in Romania, CATF recommends:. 🇷🇴 Developing a dedicated Romanian CCS strategy.📝 Conducting robust CO₂ storage assessments and planning CO₂ transport.💶 Strengthening the legal framework and create funding mechanisms.

Romania has ample opportunity to link its major emitters with potential storage sites, because of its unique geology. CATF’s analysis shows that of 92 emitters considered, +50% are located within 10 km of potential storage sites & could require minimal infrastructure development.

CATF’s new fact sheet shows that Romania has the potential to store almost 330 years of Romania, Hungary, and Bulgaria’s combined yearly point source emissions. This estimated storage capacity of 22.6 Gt would be in saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon fields.

Romania has committed to decarbonising its economy, including key industries that employ over a fifth of its workforce. These industrial sectors emit 10 million tonnes of fossil CO2 per year, which is 38% of total CO2 emissions.

To utilise CCS to reach climate neutrality, Austria would need to export CO₂. Austria's feasibility study found that the development of a CO₂ collection and transport network would handle ~5–20 million tonnes of CO₂ per year by midcentury, if CCS is deployed at scale.

CATF’s new fact sheet shows that Austria, compared to many other European countries, has limited potential for CO₂ storage due to its geology. Potential storage would only be enough to store 14 years worth of Austria’s yearly industrial emissions.

Austrian authorities have recognised that carbon capture is necessary to address hard-to-abate industrial emissions, which emit 20.1 million tonnes of fossil CO2 per year, accounting for over a third of net greenhouse gas emissions.
