The hippocampus is a structure found in the brain, and plays a role in learning and memory. It was first described by Venetian anatomist Julius Caesar Aranzi in 1564, who likened it to a seahorse. Hippocampus comes from the Greek hippos (horse) and kampos (sea monster).
