We also assessed physiological effects via changes in heart rate. While we found strong elevations at the beginning of the experience, we also found effects normalising while participants were still immersed in the experience, further supporting the safety of DMTx 4/n

Our new paper showing the psychological and physiological effects of extended DMT infusions (for 30 minutes) has just been published. Work led by the great @lisaxiaolu from our DMT Research Group at the Centre for Psychedelic Research @Imperial_PRG 1/n

We administered various doses to extend the usually short-lived DMT peak effects (1-2 minutes) to 30 minutes. Elevated intensity ratings collected during the DMTx experience demonstrated success, while low anxiety ratings suggest that the experience was safe 2/n

We assessed different facets of DMTx, which revealed pronounced feelings of immersion into an alternate reality, visual effects, and entity experiences, while ego-dissolution remained low 3/n

DMT levels in the blood peaked at the end of the experience, while we saw a sustained response in intensity ratings. This suggests the development of some form of short-term tolerance, which contradicts previous evidence that DMT does not induce tolerance 6/n

Our findings suggest that by flexibly adapting the intensity and dynamics of DMT, we can probe into neural, physiological and experiential mechanisms of the psychedelic experience, while personalising treatments according to the profile and needs of patients 7/n
