Wrote my first cover story for
@TeenVogue
(!!!!!!) where I speak to
@vict0ny
on weathering tragedy, being saved by music, the complexities of unbridled self-expression and where his head is currently at.
Unpopular opinion but I think Chloe x Halle split too soon. They were really coming into their own with their second album and would have done wonders if they had released a third.
Such iconic times. No charts obsession. No rancid music opinions. No nonsensical hierarchies. No unending appetite for western validation. Just a collective mission to make incredible, deliciously Nigerian music.
For many, I think it’s the fact that she has a happy ending. It disregards the rules of karma they’ve been taught - and by repeatedly placing the blame on her and not the man who LEFT his wife, she becomes an insufferable villain who should always be reminded of her misdeeds
You know what my father did when my mother started a hugely successful kerosene business? He got jealous and burnt her shop then destroyed her wares. But sure, patriarchy protects women.
For more context, Burna and Davido achieved those numbers at their 3rd/4th albums. Ayra drawing this figure at her sophomore is beyond impressive and a testament to the boundaries the aforementioned artists have broken for younger artists.
Biggest first day streams for albums by Nigerian Artists on Spotify;
1. Burna Boy (I told them) - 9.3M
2. Davido (Timeless) -8.4M
3. Burna Boy (Love, Damini) - 8.3M
4. Ayra Starr (𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗜 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝟐𝟏) - 6.3M 🆕
Please stop commodifying the death of young Nigerians. Young people getting killed by their government for protesting police brutality is not a cute little trend you can just slap on your brand. It would be ridiculous and inappropriate to make a George Floyd candle collection.
For
@RollingStone
I spent a humid Sunday morning eating Amala at Nok with
@asakemusik
.
In this piece, we talked about his journey so far, fuji, spirituality, learning from past mistakes, staying grounded, his new album, and his love for fashion.
I spoke to some of the witnesses at the
#LekkitollgateMassacre
about their experiences and wrote about it for
@VICE
. These stories are a reminder of why we should not stop fighting.
This might seem innocuous, but separating female artists and shelving them under male artists they are far better than continues to reinforce the notion that they are an option instead of a staple. Because why isn’t Tems, Ayra or Tyla up there with Burna but Rema can be??!
Linda Ikeji essentially created the template for the invasive and insensitive micro-journalism blogs like Instablog and Gistlover practice. No respect for the safety of the subject, no regard for facts, just sensationalism and an appetite for ruining people’s lives.
This is even sadder when you think about the crazy amount of time, energy, effort, blood & sweat Nigerian journalists spent documenting the protests both on the local and international level. All while straddling the grief of seeing Nigerians like themsleves getting killed.
Male tennis players have played until they were 47 or 49! A woman saying she would still like to keep playing but must choose to raise her family and focus on other ventures instead, even though this isn't a choice a man would be compelled to make, isn't too hard to grasp.
No. The lesson here is, certain things are only cool and acceptable when they are done by straight x masculine presenting men, but are considered invitation for assault and ridicule when they are done by the effeminate x queer folks who did those things first.
What’s razz about the music she makes? I’ve never seen a more self-hating group of people than you guys. That the music she makes doesn’t immediately appeal to western sensibilities doesn’t make it razz.
I'll never roll my friend under the bus just for some validation from strangers. Never. Not me.
What happened to 'ride or die?'. If you can't ride with your homie during his bad times, how are you going to do 'for better for worse?'
Hold it down for your friends. Be dependable.
nothing much to see here. just a rapist - who provided evidence that show he did rape someone - living unbothered and getting the typical support you would find with cishet Nigerian men.
A Nigerian man who got married to his white wife on a plantation is the person who started this conversation. That should tell you all you need to know.
For
@RollingStone
, I spent a late Monday afternoon speaking with
@asakemusik
on his album, exciting music career, growing up, the role Lagos played and continues to play in his artistry, being an introvert and everything else in between.
“I Told Them… might be a triumphant sonic adventure, but its creator remains stunted, refusing to grow.”
I reviewed
@burnaboy
’s latest album for
@RollingStone
“It seems as though, right off the bat, [female artists] are expected to be not just good, but exceptional to be worthy.”
The Headies continue to provide evidence that the Afrobeats industry and its institutions have almost no regard for its women.
I honestly want to be shocked at a white woman claiming she coined “Soro Soke Generation” which was literally a protest chant, but I am not tbh. White people with access have been entering spaces and telling stories locals can do with more accuracy and nuance.
*personal news!* super excited to share that I will be writing a column for
@TeenVogue
launching in January 2023. It’s an “Afrobeats Culture Column” that will serve as both a guide to and a critical eye for content coming out of the Afrobeats culture.
A sinister thing Lagos teaches you is casual cruelty. You see someone getting robbed, mind your business. You see a passenger getting bullied, keep quiet and look out the window. This city conditions you to approach kindness with suspicion, with the fear that it could kill you.
If you were likely to get killed over food you would definitely want to engage in productive conversations that can change the status quo, no matter how many times it is had. Nobody gives a shit about your discomfort.
For my latest
@TeenVogue
column, I did a deep dive into the long running bias against Afrobeats Female Artists and how it does a disservice to the industry but also to the incredible female talents across the industry.
Some people on TikTok are claiming that a group of Abuja boys created a dropbox link containing the nudes of various girls and added their IG and snapchat handles alongside it. What is worse is that many are treating it as “gist”.
Respectability politics will never let some of you live a honest life. Always shying away from saying the truth esp when it is uncomfortable and getting mad at people who choose to do otherwise. The need to remain on good terms with dangerous institutions is just sad to see.
I used to be a “it’s important to seek clarity” kind of person, but sometimes, talk is cheap and the easiest way to tell what people think of you is simply in how they treat you.
I don’t think you guys telling us to leave realize how fucked up it is to ask people to willingly become second class citizens in racist, culturally volatile environments when we have our own damn country ffs!
Rest assured if I ever host an explicitly stated QUEER party and you invite a straight person, you and that person will go back to where you are coming from.
This piece is important now more than ever. Afrobeats women did not just start “peaking”, they’ve always been on par with, even bigger than, their male counterparts. You’ve just never bothered to notice.
This, and I am not even exaggerating, is an extremely miseducating thing to say. Afrobeats artists all have varying concerns grounded in their reality that they express through their music ALL the time. You have to literally be dense not to get a sense of that.
“What happens when a person whose career has been marked by his active involvement in joy becomes inundated with loss?”
In my latest column
@TeenVogue
, I wrote about Davido’s
#TimeleesAlbum
and his long running commitment to joy even in moments of pain.
i almost got killed/viciously assaulted just last week and this is just a tip of what queer people face in Nigeria everyday. homophobia is stressful and senseless and it has to end!!
#EndHomophobiaInNigeria
We inside the 02 Arena didn’t complain about the sound because we had hell of night but emeka with two cup of beans at ojuelegba is complaining about the sound after streaming it on free site.
#DavidoO2
Just a reminder that two homophobic men killed a gay man for not letting them kito him and nothing happened to them even after they admitted to doing it. Nothing, to the best of my knowledge, has happened to them.
A lot of the commentary around Funke Akindele running for office is veiled in sexism and the disbelief that - perhaps because she is a woman - she can't possibly be serious about her political intentions the way her male counterparts have been.
The idea of having to insist that you aren’t an Igbo person sets a dangerous precedent. It is an unintended acceptance that discrimination might be okay if indeed you were an Igbo person. That you cannot believe, you a non-Igbo person, can possibly experience this.
So I just started as Citizen Editor at
@zikokomag
and I would love to speak with people who have managed to get their national ID cards in this period. If you know someone who has a story to share, I am here to listen and tell it. Please feel free to shoot me a DM. Also retweet!
“ Burna Boy seems unable to distinguish criticism from hate, and such surprisingly shallow reasoning threatens to leave a bitter taste at the end of this project.”
- Rollingstone
In the best version of this story, it is only
an accident, something that almost happens, that turns into a funny story later. In the best version of this story, you are still here. And I can hear your bright, sweet laughter and you still let me hold you in our many long hugs.

it would have been so nice to be the child of an old money Nigerian. be a part of the alté community; only pitching a story once a month, writing just for vibes, dying my hair every few weeks and partying with my fellow Nigerian-other nationality friends anytime we see in Lagos.
