This is Claude Shannon. An absolute genius. I still don’t understand why this brain is not known more. Humanity owes him a lot. Let’s spread the word. I am a Fan of Claude Shannon. #FOCS

Why does this belief not die? Life expectancies have dramatically improved at all ages! Early mortality does matter, but people are not living similarly long beyond childhood compared to a century ago. Rather, they are living considerably longer beyond childhood.

@cremieuxrecueil Much of increased life expectancy is the result of lower infant mortality. People are living similar years, more people are making it that far due to safety improvements and prevention in early years. Good thesis on the surface but I think it falls apart pretty easily.

Your brain doesn’t erase memories — it just loses the keys that unlock them. This paper introduces a key-value memory system that splits how the brain stores and retrieves. Keys go to the hippocampus for quick access. Values go to the neocortex for high-fidelity storage.

So far no drones can do this. Even elaborate light shows rely on preprogrammed routes and deterministic behavior. This emergent, dynamic behavior where the individual birds all follow one another and a ‘flock’ comes to be is still beyond edge compute.

Andrey Kolmogorov: The Soviet Counterpart to Claude Shannon When we think of information theory, the name that usually comes to mind is Claude Shannon, the American mathematician whose 1948 paper “A Mathematical Theory of Communication” founded the field.

I wrote a lengthy piece on observer relative entropy which Wolfram identifed, and what it means, here. Also John Baez defined entropy as unknown information, long ago.

Entropy — a term commonly thought of as a measure of disorder — is now known to change depending on the observer. Anthony Aguirre has defined a quantity he calls observational entropy that other researchers say helps to clarify ambiguity around this phenomenon.

South Park has absolutely nailed the ChatGPT effect. Used in a very selective way it can be a great information processing aid, which can augment the intelligence of naturally smart users. It’s also legit useful as a glorified thesaurus and has some use cases in diagnostics
