For the first time in many years it seems building a mid-range gpu dev machine is far cheaper than anything off the shelf or semi-custom and a “professional” grade gpu is actually cheaper than a comparable gaming gpu. Feels good but also idk if I actually want to build my own 🤣

Brussels is nice and warm this time of year… I think I’ll go to FOSDEM. I get in to Brussels Thursday around noon and happy to meet up and nerd out Thursday - Sunday.

#rustlang follows c++ std::round to round away from zero. There's experimental support for a function that follows IEEE-754 round to even https://t.co/j4gwcH6hw2

Julia also uses IEEE-754 but provides a nice interface to use round away from zero within the same round interface

C++ std::round uses the round I was taught in school (away from zero) while std::rint follows IEEE-754 round to even by default, but also provides a few modes (none of them equivalent to std::round!)

Fell in to a quagmire of rounding when I noticed numpy.round(0.5) returns 0. Python's built-in math.round does the same. Turns out this is the correct IEEE-754 rounding mode to round half to the nearest even so round(1.5) returns 2.

Everyone working at openAI should be ashamed of themselves for empowering this insanity. This is straight up incumbents trying to own a technology relying on lawfare and regulatory capture. They know that open source will get ahead of them if left unrestricted.

Overconfidence about AI is a lot like overconfidence about bikes. Many people are convinced that their mental model of how bikes work is coherent and accurate, right until you force them to flesh out the details.

Thanks to @Intel for their continued #partnership and shared mission towards the future of private wireless networks using #AI. See highlights mentioning DeepSig from Cristina Rodriguez's talk at #MWC23 on ’Natural Intelligence: Can AI Really Think for Itself?’.

Journalists who cover Elon Musk have been suspended on Twitter tonight: @Donie O'Sullivan from CNN, Aaron Rupar and the Washington Post's @drewharwell. Rupar tells me he has "no idea" why it happened.

It was also able to explain aspects of ofdm equalization to me and generate some python code that was more or less conceptually correct including a channel simulator. Struggled with the concept of complex awgn though
