Mastodon is my new glimmer of hope for a human experience on the web. It reminds me of the experience we had long ago, when it was less about profits or politics, and more about connection. I’ll see y’all around, on Mastodon or elsewhere. Not here. #mastodonmigration

This brings me to Mastodon. Mastodon is a nonprofit, decentralized social media platform. Its “antiviral design” promotes healthy conversation, not oneupmanship. As a nonprofit and open source software, it can never be bought, and users are not manipulated by algorithms.

Twitter hasn’t been great either. I suppose I’ve turned a blind eye with hope for improvement. The recent events of Musk’s takeover, and ensuing layoffs, extinguished that glimmer of hope. A platform run solely by a billionaire can never be inclusive, honest or safe.

Years ago, I deleted my Facebook account after realizing how toxic it became. It became a daily source of anxiety, bullying and contention. It split close relationships between my friends and family, and promoted a gamified narrow world view mixed with misinformation.
