It's that time of year in Minnesota for Truth-in-Taxation meetings. Make time to go to them. You'll learn a lot about how local government operates and what it takes to provide services.

We took this old dinosaur out of service today. Pre Y2k tech. Just sat there operating as a powered speed limiter for one endpoint for decades.

UI consistency (lack of, really) is a major fault of cloud tools. Log in on a Monday and get surprised by what changed.

For a while, I’ve been involved in a very exciting business. I’m a real estate agent leasing and selling old warehouses. My clientele: mob bosses, violent smuggling rings, larger gangs, the occasional cult. Anyone who needs lots of interrogation space or room for LOTS of crates.

And "boring" is just a shock word I use. "Routine", "unremarkable" are less jarring words for the goal.

IT surprises are the result of many decisions over time. Making IT boring takes even more time.

So much of my anxiety right now is how long it takes to make IT boring. I do not like surprises and too many people tolerate IT surprises.

A telemarketer rang my phone with an autodialer and got my voicemail. They sang a little song and hung up. Instead of wasting some of my precious life they left me art. I cannot express how human and wonderful it felt.

Me: "Hmmm, no internet this morning. Looks like DNS isn't working." DNS provider status: Minor Event Me reading further: DNS all down. How is that a "minor" event?!

I wish that working with an MSP wasn't like dealing with a ham-fisted, barely responsive, remote employee.

Basically, make sure you've put in a lot of whale-phishing filters in place. All the filters.

When I was in public sector IT we dealt with a lot of phishing. But now that I'm in private sector, I'm like: "whoa!"

There's no incentive for an MSP to do great in anything. Managed services is the enshittification of IT.
