Lydia Reeves was so worried about the shape of her vulva in her teens, she pleaded with her mum for surgery. She later realised that hers was normal and now creates plaster casts of vulvas to show the variations. @DrNaomiSutton | https://t.co/LZ14TqlzOt | #stephspackedlunch

@instagram @mycallaly how can we dismantle the social taboos and shame around vulvas if we can’t use social media to inform, support and educate?

@instagram @mycallaly how can we educate them if you’re not only erasing these pictures and comments from people who, for the first time, feel seen and represented, but further feeding into this idea that vulvas are something that we should be ashamed of and should be kept hidden?

@instagram yesterday, in partnership with @mycallaly, a series of realistic vulva illustrations went up on our page. within a few hours (and after thousands of likes and hundreds of comments), it was taken down because of "nudity"

By removing this content, you’re stopping all three of these positive actions from taking place on your platform, allowing shame and confusion to continue, and actively erasing people’s experiences. It’s time to do better. #StopCensoringVulvas @vagina_museum

Our pledges are 1) to call a vulva a vulva, 2) to create better educational content so young people are aware of the huge diversity within normal, healthy vulvas, and 3) to promote accurate, diverse imagery of vulvas, challenging that some vulvas are more ‘normal’ than others. /8

More dangerously, you’re adding to the idea that vulvas are something we should be ashamed of, to the extent that we can’t even show illustrations of a completely natural body part. How can we dismantle social taboos if we can’t use social media to inform, support & educate? /7
