Yes, it’s an established C technique to have a struct with a tag and a union to emulate a sum. Any link between the two is conventional and never enforced by the compiler.

The point being that sums come with pattern matching; the compiler can warn you when you haven’t handled all possible cases. You do not get this with C unions, and the only way you could think they are the same is if you think the only point of types is memory layout.

A “sum type” is a union. A “product type” is a struct. C has had these since before 1970. If someone uses these terms as though they were some new amazing inventions, they probably do not have much programming experience yet.
