Music in schools should be non-negotiable. It should be non-negotiable because the impact it has on the learning and lives of young people is unparalleled. It mixes the academic with the creative, the disciplined with the expressive, and the focused with the free. It’s essential.

Conductor Sir George Solti died on 5 September 1997. He could be a thrilling and exciting conductor, but he could also infuriate and frustrate. Which recordings sum up your feelings about Solti’s art? For me his Chicago Mahler 2 was highly exaggerated, but his Brahms is gorgeous.
