Failed to see the Winterton Red-backed Shrike twice previously so today a case of third time lucky. Also an excuse for 3rd helpings of the confiding LGS, Elsewhere, earlier in the day, Horsey was almost a bird-free zone but being positive it’s another day closer to the big one!

Glad to finally get in on the Glossy Ibis action with this bird near Conder Green in the northern reaches of the Fylde. Seems likely that there are 3 birds in the area at the moment which is likely a sign of things to come @FyldeBirdClub

Found a Hoopoe this morning on the Goat’s Path at Glanroon. Always nice birds to see. (photo a Hoopoe I found in April)

I planted Nasturtiums this year in order to attract White butterflies. It was a great success, lots of these Large White caterpillars, but there's not much of the Nasturtiums left!

Female Dark Green Fritillaries are often heavily marked. This one on Whitbarrow had a lovely green flush to the upper forewing. It's more like the Scottish form, Argynnis a aglaja @savebutterflies

27/7/25 Cumbria - Some years, #HuttonRoof treats us to a very interesting #orchid. It's clearly from the Epipactis phyllanthes group but quite unlike anything else I've seen in the UK. It most closely matches the description of a Scandinavian taxon, var. confusa #wildflowerhour

Dark Green and High Brown Fritillaries yesterday on Whitbarrow. The convex forewing of the DG Frit compared with the slightly concave forewing of the HB Frit. plus the row of dark dots often straight in DG and discontinuous in HB Frit. Both useful field identifiers.
