Well there’s no mystery about my political position I suppose. But I hope you vote. It’s the purest expression of where you stand politically. I could say plenty more, but as my dad says, “why bother talking about politics? you can never change anyone’s views anyway.”

We are fun. Our Holiday Show band is funner. And our surprise guests are funnest. It’s a fun factory.

And I did learn it from him, eventually. And I am grateful for that lesson as well as for what his sacrifices led to for me. He went on to say that “it was a good life and it’s only gotten better.” That is my dad. 95 years old. He is a powerful lesson.

This in Baudette, MN on the Rainy River, about as far as you can get before Canada, he said, “lots of lessons.” Stupidly I asked “what was the lesson?” He responded, “hard work!” Which is I guess a lesson he might be surprised to know I learned in my way…

Today he was burning hot with the old stories that have made him, which he never tires of telling and which I am more than ever grateful to hear. Describing the dairy operation he ran as a 13 year old boy where he hand milked 30 cows every morning with his sister…

My dad: he’s planning to come to holiday show. He would like to see you there. He’s a remarkable man. Even in what is a deeply challenging circumstance with change all around him and much of it formidable, he remains as he has ever been: happy and optimistic.

In Chinese Ghost Stories the Fox spirit is always villainous and a liar. It’s funny how this this archetype has crossed oceans. The treacherous Fox is alive and well, scheming our destruction.

The big @newstandards holiday show goes on sale tomorrow at noon. I am feeling sort of out of it and distracted right now given my dad’s health battles, but my dad LOVES the holiday show and so I’m pretty excited for him to see it this year, god willing.

If you have a little spare bandwidth, have a thought for my dad. He needs your energy right now.

I have to say that I’m sooo excited to know Cormac McCarthy has two more novels coming out. The Passenger, as I imagine it, is a rumination on Iggy Pop’s brilliant tune about driving and stuff. Or something. I’m psyched.
