He was operating independently today and I realized the spindles are down when he's QCing. I told him spindles should never be down unless there's a QC failure, he was surprised- his Big Shop employers stop the process for inspections! How the hell do you make money like that..?
The big aerospace shop the Sumerian worked at had setup guys run a full dry run and then a first cycle at <<50% feed as SOP, no matter the cycle length. Sometimes entire shifts just dry running. If that's what your spindle time looks like yeah you need a lot of it

SCENES FROM THE MACHINE SHOP: These were kind of a bitch. No drawing, only verbal instructions & sample parts for thread gauges. Uses a standard old school oilfield thread form (Hughes), but it isn’t industry standard coupling dimensions. Reverse engineer and approach slow.

Had a convo abt operational risk regimes in small vs megacorpo shops ("This is an all-in shop. We make money gambling") and he spent the day hustling on 3 machines before smoking the bar puller on stock in a bad turret change and forcing alignment. Amazingly fast progress

main problem here is the neighbouring prosumer boxing gym/weightroom/yoga studio complex is probably slavering for more space. really hate competing for the only space zoned for mfg use with these ppl

growing up in the maritimes, I got used to feckless political and economic leadership from the provincial gentry and their lawyer catamites, but i really never expected the whole country to just abdicate governance to foreign gangs. I guess that's what "post national" meant
