Spend more time on higher-utility phonemic awareness activities such as blending and segmenting and less time on rhyming.
It's true! You don’t need students to spend lots of time practicing rhyming to support their word recognition. Instead, teach phonemic awareness. You can use Elkonin boxes to make it concrete - and connect letters to sounds as soon as possible.
