As has been noted by a few others here, it was on this day, in 1963 that “Jason and the Argonauts” was released. Notable for the talents of “stop motion” master, Ray Harryhausen and famed composer, Bernard Herrmann, It’s filled with legendary creatures & unforgettable sequences,
Today,
@Shudder
began implementing large scale layoffs, & “cut backs in operations”. It’s a sad day. We have appreciated that
#Shudder
has promoted new horror & made it accessible to so many. Our sympathies are w/ those laid off by AMC today. We thank you & wish you the best.
41 years ago today, “Q, The Winged Serpent was released. A Larry Cohen produced/directed film, it’s the heartwarming story of a swindler who is the only person w/info on the nest of a winged deity/monster, Quetzalcoatl terrorizing NYC. (Psst. It’s nest is in the Chrysler Bldg.)
It’s the 93rd birthday of Riccou Browning, the last original actor to portray one of the Universal Monsters. He portrayed the “Gillman” in underwater scenes in “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, & sequels “Revenge of the Creature” & “The Creature Walks Among Us”. Happy birthday!
Today in 1993, Guillermo del Toro's impressive debut feature film, "Cronos" premiered. It was the topic of our 49th podcast episode, recorded, April 2021. It’s perfect viewing for this weekend, there IS an egg! (Well, kinda) listen here:
Just received the sad news of the death of director/producer Roger Corman. To call him a trailblazer or “legend” would downplay his importance to independent films, and he’s responsible of giving a long litany of well known actors & directors their starts. R.I.P.
#RogerCorman
A very happy birthday to actress, Adrienne Barbeau, star of some of our favorite films, “Creepshow” (1982), “The Fog” (1980), “Escape from New York”(1981) Among others.
Anybody out there have a copy of the Criterion Collection “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) We’d like to get your opinion as to wether the extras and the transfer quality make this clearly THE dvd of this classic the one to own?
Happy Birthday Edgar Allan Poe to who the Horror genre and community owes so much. Here a short time he left a very rich legacy and inspired so many other great artists that have followed him in the years since his death (January 19,1809 - October 7, 1849) Requiescat in pace.
Wether it’s discussing the revolting details of hand dyers, witchcraft, The development & ensuring debate on appropriate hot dog toppings, the events surrounding the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla, We love
@therealjoebob
’s rants/lectures. Where do you stand
#MutantFam
?
It has been noted elsewhere, but, w/the new year, lost silent film, “London After Midnight” starring Lon Chaney, passes into public domain. The last existing print of the film is thought to have been destroyed in a fire in 1965. If you find a copy, tell us we’d love to see it.
While aware of “occasional editing/censoring of various films, i.e. changing “offensive language”, shit to shoot, etc. the move to now delete significant portions of content, or force producers to do so is reprehensible. Why does
@Tubi
feel this is needed / justified?
Tubi has fallen.
I don't know if this is true, but I know many Full Moon films have edited nudity out of their films on Tubi. This is the danger of advertiser-based streaming.
With the

preparing for tomorrow's

Who wouldn’t love sitting around a campfire hearing

Today, in 1951, “The Thing from Another World” was released. A crashed UFO is discovered near a arctic base. It’s the topic of our 36th episode, recorded, November 2020. Our rating system changed this episode, & Dave perused “Mr. Boston’s Bartender Guide”.
Ricou Browning, the last of the original actors to portray one of the Universal Monsters has died. He portrayed the “Gillman” in underwater scenes in “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, & sequels “Revenge of the Creature” & “The Creature Walks Among Us”

. We expect to see headband, wristbands, leg warmers, & French cut leotards in abundance!
We could not let the day pass without noting that “Creature from the Black Lagoon” premiered 70 years ago today, 1954 in Detroit. Millicent Patrick designed the “Gillman” outfit, and it’s our opinion that the costume holds up to even today.

Our very first episode was devoted to
@missannabiller
’s “The Love Witch”. Frankly, we loved it. Give the episode a listen, mix up a “Love Potion” cocktail, & you’ll be prepped for Ms.Biller’s appearance on Last Drive-In with

As many others are noting, It’s the Birthday of Cassandra Peterson, known as horror hostess, actress, writer and singer Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. We thank her for all the many hours of entertainment she’s produced.
Here’s a photo from 1957, taken at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, promoting Hammer’s then-new Frankenstein monster as portrayed by Christopher Lee in “The Curse of Frankenstein”! Wonder whatever became of it?
It’s worth noting that today is National Gin and Tonic Day! So, if you imbibe and enjoy a good gin & tonic, mix one up tonight!

Have you seen “Equinox”(1970)? If you enjoy the “Evil Dead”films, you should enjoy this film, it has “forbidden ancient books”, secluded cabins, & myriad demons & monsters. Check it out, and then, listen to our episode (

) from April 2020. Listen here:
We just noticed -
@therealjoebob
