While mass expulsion is an historical phenomenon, it is very much still in use today with an average rate of 1.56 expulsions initiated each year over the last 50 years. And 7 expulsion events in the 5 years between 2015-2020, affecting over 2.1 million persons. 4/

Some cases include the Ottoman Empire’s expulsion of Orthodox Greeks (1913-23); Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians from Uganda (1972); African migrants expelled from Nigeria (1983 & 1985); and Haitians expelled from the Dominican Republic (1991, 96, 99, 2015), just to name a few… 3/.

Mass expulsion is defined as, “a systematic govt-sponsored policy to remove an ethnic, racial, religious or national group, as such, with no individual legal review and with no recognition of the right to return.” Is has occurred all over the world in the 120 yrs examined. 2/
