Many highlights from this week but one of my favourite is the slack message from @_kristenspencer that was like “in case you want to meet them, here’s the 10 people I hired while you were gone!”.

Taking a moment to celebrate the fact that I while I was off work for 6 weeks, my team operated just fine without me. It took years to get here. The management dream!.

I'm halfway through a 6-week "sabbatical" from work. I used the first half to rest and recover, and gather enough mental strength to google "tax planning for US citizens residing in Canada" . I hate this stuff! Anyone in a similar situation have an accountant they'd recommend?.

All I think about when I read articles like this is how this would never happen if men were the ones who got pregnant. And yet every unwanted pregnancy is caused by a man.
Today is the 49th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Roe is “unlikely to make it to 50 in any recognizable form,” write @IlanaPL and @lauren_kelley.

I’m biased but @_kristenspencer is absolutely amazing. So many great opportunities to join her growing team
I am hiring! A lot! Right now! And so is everyone else in tech. So why might you want to consider working with me at @JoinLeague? (More info + links to jobs in thread).

Managing virtual junior kindergarten requires 100% attention. Especially when it’s in French and your kid isn’t a confident French speaker. My work is suffering but at least my French is getting better? 🤷🏻♀️.

Love this post by @_kristenspencer about leveling up the senior engineers on your team. Great timing considering this week we announced promotions for 3 senior engineers in her group!

I was the first woman engineer at League, and now there are 40 of us! 🤯. One of the women on the team started a monthly Zoom hangout for the group earlier this year, and I love getting to meet the new women who keep joining the team (yesterday getting to meet some in person!) 💜

(I write this as I'm thinking about all the things currently on sitting on my plate that I'm doing a half-ass job of handling, but would make for great career opportunities for my direct reports).

You need to challenge your team members to keep them engaged, but pair it with an honest open discourse about capacity and priorities. Make it so that they're the ones who can tell you when they have too much on their plate, vs. deciding for them.

I see new managers often feel uncomfortable asking their teams to take on more work. It comes from a place of trying to "protect" them, but this habit backfires when you're not exposing those team members to the challenges that lead to career growth.
