@TyneDerwentWay @balticgateshead @NEYDandL @TNLComFund The mute swan grazing by the river’s edge; the ringed plovers foraging in the mud flats alongside the noisy curlews; the black headed gulls (in their winter form), the cormorants in flight & diving off the staithes; the robin & the family of long-tailed tits all say hello Dad xxx

@TyneDerwentWay @balticgateshead @NEYDandL @TNLComFund I’m now sitting at The Staithes Cafe where honey from @NEYDandL managed beehives is sold. This feels bitter sweet as I think of my own Dad and how much I miss him.

My location here at Dunston Staithes is interesting as it was part of the redevelopment of Tyneside during the Gateshead Garden Festival of 1990. Somewhere I went with my parents as a toddler and when my Mam was heavily pregnant with my sister

Of course the streets and back lanes of his Elswick childhood are mostly knocked down but I’m still looking over at the St Michael’s RC Church which was the centre point for much of his Tyneside Irish upbringing

I’m taking some bereavement leave at the moment after unexpectedly losing my Dad. A Tyneside cycle seemed a fitting way to remember him and I thought I would share some thoughts as a 🧵 I’m sitting by Dunston Staithes looking across the river towards where he grew up

Been away from Twitter for a while but a great reason to be back. The @austerityalters #AALCsymposium was excellent and I was honoured to be part of the panel on “play, theatre and qualitative research”. Congrats @Sarah_M_Hall @BudworthPoppy for your leadership & organisation

There appears to have been an oil spill in the River Tyne. Looking at quite substantial oil in the water (rainbow scum and smell) passing under the Millennium Bridge, @balticgateshead and the nesting kittiwakes 😢 of course directly impacting the aquatic life
