Leaving Essex tomorrow after a fortnight here that I'll cherish forever. A last waltz down the Wall with my daughter this afternoon. The Short-eared Owl came out to say goodbye. Thank you

All day out on the Dengie coast today, I think my last such chance this year. I love this place like nowhere else on Earth. 16 miles, 10 hours, 63 bird species... Swallow 5 Green Sandpiper 2 Snow Bunting Short-eared Owl 😊 Merlin Thank you so much for having me ❤️

Merlin rapidly on track to becoming my Bird of the Year. Tons of wonderful encounters in the last 5 days. Today was total chaos at high tide among the wader and duck flocks, hunting alongside a Peregrine.

Easterly winds on the Essex coast today brought in plenty of Redwing and my first few Brambling of the autumn. 56 bird species all told. Delighted to see a Hen Harrier drifting over the fields at midday. Watch out for sunbathing Adder atop the sea wall!

Some snaps from the Dengie marshes this afternoon. Tons of Pintail, Wigeon, Teal, Golden Plover, Lapwing, murmurating Knot, etc. Peregrine sent them all up several times. Clouded Yellow unconcerned.

Darbar Festival magic at the Barbican this morning seeing Uday Bhawalkar. Totally sublime! Last time we saw him we had been married for two whole days, over 12 years ago in Varanasi. Very poignant for us. @darbarfestival

Everything good today on Portland among the Clouded Yellow with Dad 💛 Hundreds of Swallow massed up, some House & Sand Martin too. Gorgeous! Wonderful Wheatear in attendance, a favourite species from our Dawlish Warren days, when I was a boy and Dad was... whatever I am now!
