For context, the big three plants in Canada can process a little over 10,000 head per day so the closures in the US represent about 90% of the total Canadian capacity.

Worth noting that another Tyson plant will reduce from two shifts to one per day, further lowering packing capacity. The Nebraska plant can process 6,000 head per day and the Texas plant that is reducing will cut 3,000 head per day. 3/n

Impact is difficult to predict. Lower supply could put pressure on consumer prices but the closure could also reduce competition for live cattle ➡️lower producer prices. Given losses, lower live cattle prices would be unlikely to lower consumer prices. 2/n

Impact of low cattle inventories starting to be felt. Tyson is closing a processing plant to stem loses due to low volumes and high acquisition costs. Packer margins usually inversely correlated to cattle prices. 1/n

Not to self. You should always shave and wear a collared shirt on days that Stats Can releases food inflation numbers.

Particularly interesting food inflation numbers this month. The focus will likely be on the annual number (3.4%) but what is more interesting is that the monthly number was -0.6%. Food is more expensive than it was a year ago but many items are cheaper than they were in September
