This is a patent model of the library step-chair, which was invented in 1853 🪑 As part of his patent application, creator Augustus Eliaers made this miniature version of his chair to demonstrate how it worked. See it on view now in "Tiny Treasures":

Franz Xaver Winterhalter was one of the most sought-after and fashionable portraitists in Europe. Born #OnThisDay in 1805, he painted Wiencyzyslawa Barczewksa, Madame de Jurjewicz in 1860. This portrait is a post‑Romantic glamour shot of the kind that made him famous.
