I have never seen a video that has made me feel more seen as a person. I am this bird, I will forever be this bird, yelling what doing aggressively to try and get out of trouble. I saw this on Saturday and can’t stop thinking about it.
You should be paying attention to TikTok, and young people.
Almost every TikTok video on my feed since day one was being painstakingly hand-captioned by users. When people uploaded content without captions, users of all kinds in the comments would ask them to do it in future.
I want to talk a little about the danger of false positives in game development.
This isn't meant to be a downer thread, but it's something I've been thinking about a lot and noticing in terms of trends from 2021 and heading into 2022, but spans back a few years.
My mum has never used a controller in her life and she just managed to steal the keys from the gardener in goose game and when he took them back she called him a dog and all my dreams are coming true
Seriously so cool to see young people seeing accessibility as the starting point, not an addition or option, encouraging others to see it that way and weaving it into their daily use of technology like anything else.
The industry bias against mobile-only games is such a bummer. Prepare for a semi-rant.
You can go to Metacritic and view all games by all platforms for 2020, but you won't find high scoring mobile games. You will however, find mobile games that released cross-platform.
All these reports coming out *cough GDC state of industry cough* that correlate working from home with lower productivity during the pandemic make me SO frustrated. Working from home is not inherently less productive! Correlation does not imply causation.
"Nearly half of game makers feel working from home has
lowered their productivity" should not be your headline. "Nearly half of game makers feel working from home DURING A PANDEMIC has lowered their productivity."
Just found out that
@Charalanahzard
has chronic fatigue. Seriously, there are so many of us out there kicking butt while living with chronic, exhaustive conditions that drain us. It never slows down our ambition though. The universe tried to nerf us & we kept going. 💪
Not just this, but people would request content warnings be added, and slowly but surely, I realised that videos WITHOUT captions/cw were the exception, not the rule. THEN, Threads from Instagram introduced automatic filtering of curse words and HIGH quality automatic captions.
Hey, just for the record, and because it appears to be something people need to hear right now:
Regardless of personal circumstances, it is unrealistic to expect yourself to be as productive as normal during a global pandemic. Read it, repeat it, forgive yourself.
Cue 90% of creators recording there, then uploading to TikTok to ensure best quality captions. And NOW, just in the last week, you can do text-to-speech in TikTok as well, further enhancing the accessibility of the platform.
I wanna talk about why this matters, a little.
Most people know by now that when you make a game, you're not competing with other games, you're competing for player TIME.
The second you reference another media point, individual bias, preference, and conclusions come into play.
Got 20 minutes?
Have a read about how to approach your branding, how to tweak your pitches to communicate different things about your game, and when to use them.
Brooklyn 99 is perfect proof of great humor that never punches down and anyone who complains about nothing being funny anymore and comedy now being made to be too PC is probably just maybe a bit of a butthead because I laugh out loud at that show every night
So, I tried Kind Words.
I sent out a message about something and the response made me cry.
Then I got to respond to this person & many more. This game is something special.
More games like this please. Let's find ways to use technology to care & love for one another.
& then, in the comments, people say "you're one of the good ones."
Stop pretending these mysterious 'bad guys' can never be friendly, kind, compassionate, collaborative. People who seem great can do really shitty things.
Take that anger, use it for action. Stop being shocked.
I wish marketing hadn't been abused and poisoned so much as a line of work.
I love the idea of helping someone find the new thing they love. It's like a gift you get to give to a stranger. Good marketing shouldn't invade your space and force its way into your home.
Bam told me last night about a terminology used at work called "Minimum Lovable Product" instead of Minimum Viable Product and I'm obsessed with it and stealing it and keeping it forever.
If you’re just nice and genuine to people you’ll find that this inherently creates really nice relationships and GUESS WHAT U JUST NETWORKED. Stop looking at networking as a hierarchy and learn about your peers and people YOU can help first ✌️
So
@hootsuite
released a Social Media report looking at upcoming trends, and it identified one thing that I think is super relevant to community managers and marketers in games.
They talk about the intersection of public vs private relationships with audience.
One thing that my sexual assault training taught me is that action is not up to you.
Don’t demand people share their experiences, stories or name their abusers. You don’t get to decide how they find peace or justice & you’re not helping the victim by charging in ready to fight.

The fact that Untitled Goose Game is trending gives me so much joy. What a great world to live in when we can all unite over geese being evil, evil creatures. So glad to be part of seeing this, and games like it, made over time from the work I get to do. Dream job.
Game devs: here’s a really easy way to improve your marketing copy - stop telling players you have hundreds of levels or procgen gameplay or multiplayer in a giant list - why is that a good thing? Turn features into benefits depending on your key audience ✨
Hi friends! I have some news that might surprise or shock some of you - I’m leaving Film Victoria!
I cannot even begin to tell you all how lucky I’ve been to have my time at Film Victoria, and as excited as I am for what’s next, I’m also SO sad to go!
So we gave our bridal party disposable cameras and if this isn't the most me photo ever taken, my lord. Also bring back disposable cameras, it makes every photo look like it was taken in the 80s and it's the best.
We got told an anecdote today by someone at our publisher that will fuel me till the END OF TIME, and is so sweet it almost sounds made up - copied verbatim from Slack:
"One of the older ladies who volunteers with me at my local community theater came up to me this weekend...
This is never okay and it is happening, everywhere. No more. Solidarity to Riot today and every single person in games who has gone unheard, unassisted, unsupported, and had their mental health put below a potential profit.

Top comment: "There are so many games out there. This one just isn’t for you, and that’s okay. It doesn’t need to bend over backwards with an easy mode."
Cool, now look someone with a disability in the eye that doesn't have access to many most talked about games, & say that.
“If you paid me $11.99, you get the right to play my game - but you don’t get the right to call me an asshole or my players an asshole. If there’s one person turning the forum toxic, who can’t be constructive, who hurts other players, I don’t need you there.”
@tha_rami
HI SURPRISE OUR GAME LAUNCHES SOON. It’s been such a pleasure spending nights and weekends with this team on something I love so much.
If you’re reading this PLEASE retweet the original tweet. It makes a huge difference and means the world to me. 💗💗💗
Grumble grumble, if you worked from home before this, you are not a less productive human, and if you're working from home for the first time - you are not learning how to work from home, you are learning how to do work at home during a global crisis. They are Not The Same.
Time for a thread on USPs!
But wait, hold up, what's a USP?
A USP refers to the 'unique selling proposition'. What this means is the thing that is unique about a product that makes it different to competitors and therefore, a reason to purchase it over something else.
So a lot of people in a row somehow tripped and gave me an award, and I'm so grateful - I couldn't thank everyone but I did my damn best to do so and in the process SPOKE FOR WAY TOO LONG I'M SO SORRY. But in case you missed it:
🧑🤝🧑 Playtesting is huge for games, and this can definitely be a great indicator. However, people at an event are looking for things to do and fill their time. They're also very unlikely to tell you your game sucks, even if they believe so, to your face.
my mum doesn’t play video games at all other than candy crush but this friday night she’s coming over and I’m going to make her play the goose game because I’m certain being able to honk and be an asshole goose is all she’s ever really wanted in a game
Our first individual awards. The

“We can figure out the marketing once we know what the final game is.” No, no no. They need to go hand in hand if you’re making something commercial. How can you figure out the game if you don’t know who you’re making it for, and what they like, and vice versa?
A few weeks ago I mentioned using a few tools that have totally revolutionised (not kidding) how we manage content and marketing at Summerfall. So I'm going to walk you through three!

"We're more than developers, we're family."
"You eat, sleep, breathe games."
"You're happy to jump in to solve problems wherever needed, and love to be challenged."
Be like Nintendo, and delay your games when they need to be delayed.
I love Animal Crossing, and I'm excited to play it but not at the expense of any of the team working on it to rush to get it to market.
It’s really obvious when you’re befriending someone for a benefit. I always get sad when people leave the industry and people decide to unfollow them. Did you really only befriend these people for their value? I wonder who’d still be interested in my life if I wasn’t in games.
fuck people w thousands followers making guides on how to Get Popular. numbers dont matter, but not for the reasons you think. a strong supportive community always always ALWAYS prevails. uplift your friends and genuinely appreciate them, and dont use people as stepping stones.

I understand we're all trying to understand the effects of this, but forgetting the pandemic and the flow on affects that has (many mention kids who, during normal conditions, would be at school, therefore not distracting those working from home to the same degree) is bad data.
So grateful that
@emilybuckshot
is calling this out. It’s not JUST issues in project management, and sometimes it’s not that at all. It comes from systemic culture issues. It’s easy to blame poor planning. It’s harder to examine our systems and processes.
We won an Apple Design Award for inclusivity. We WON. We won it. Still floored. Every time I think I can’t be prouder of the Aconite time, whoop there it is. BRB spending my day crying happy tears.
Congratulations to all of the Apple Design Award winners! These outstanding developers brought their creative, inventive and inspiring ideas to life through their apps & we can’t wait to see what they create next.
Waking up to a DICE nomination is a pretty great way to start a Wednesday. So proud of the entire team and so grateful that people continue to see something special in what we created together, in arguably the hardest year of any of our lives. ❤️

I really feel for the teams who are published by Tripwire rather than partnered with them and now have to come out and make a public decision and stance against someone who likely has a huge amount of power over them.

🥳All your developer friends say it's great.
This industry is full of really lovely, wonderful people. Many of whom, through wanting to deeply support you and celebrate you and see you succeed, will tell you something is on the right track...
🧑🤝🧑 Additionally, if your game is for sale at the event and people aren't dropping cash on it as they stand at your booth, they don't love it that much. Most will wishlist it (sometimes to be polite, if you're staring at them) and immediately forget.
This is genuinely the best thing I've ever heard and I've now made it my mission to get some kind of thank you to this lady because I love her and she's made my year and an important thing for me is for the games I work on to reach people who haven't felt seen before and and 🥹

So somehow the marketing for Stray Gods has been good enough to reach an 80 year old woman in the middle of nowhere who doesn’t even own a PC or console but loves musicals."
🧑🤝🧑Success at an event does not mean success at launch. The bright side of digital events on a Steam storefront is there is so little friction for a call to action. At an event, you are one of fifty games (maybe more) and they are so pumped to be there that your game gets a buff.

🧑🤝🧑You're Popular At An Event
This one is less of an issue now than ever, but still begs talking about. I used to talk to devs all the time that would show at a small to large expo and talk about how players 'loved' the game and were so excited for it to come out.
✨ Who are your favorite accessibility & diversity advocates in games?
Perhaps they deal with accessibility themselves, maybe they advocate on behalf of others, or perhaps they're otherwise diverse! Maybe all the above!
I'd love to get them on my timeline. Pls RT! 💛
