Sakura and Sasuke is indeed a terrible endgame, no matter how you flip it. It simply comes down to how the characters are written and their stories. The context and details is what makes it terrible vs just poorly written, like the other couples.

One Piece is successful because they took the castings seriously, stayed on theme, kept the campy unserious theme of the series, and did not drain it of color visually nor tone down the costumes in an attempt to be taken seriously and be edgy.
