For @SBNation I wrote about three Mississippi high school football players who died in the same season, and how inequality in state funding and public education can make football's risks that much greater

Violent crime is up. Street life is often lacking. Can a $3.7 billion convention center expansion transform the fortunes of the city’s central business district?

What’s wrong with downtown Dallas? . -Violent crime was up 45% in 2024.-Streets are built for cars to speed.-Sidewalk life almost nonexistent . But it’s also more populous and developed than it’s ever been (pop. 15,000, which is up from 500 in late 90s).

The problem is the benefits go almost entirely to people in Colorado’s cities, while a small portion of rural residents on the state’s Western Slope -- especially ranchers -- shoulder nearly all the costs.

So knowing there are wolves is like getting a yearly $99 bonus they can spend somewhere in the economy, a total of $115m if you include all pro-wolf residents.

The people in CO who like wolves really like them. One researcher found that those who voted to reintroduce them would pay as much as $99 annually for the existence of wolves in the state. But they pay nothing except for a small portion of taxes.

The vote to bring them back in Colorado was decided by the cities. Although the vast majority of counties voted "no" on wolf reintroduction, nearly two-thirds of Denver residents voted yes.

Since 1995, however, a handful of western states like Idaho, Montana, and Colorado have reintroduced the historically-hated carnivores for a simple reason: They wanted them back, believing in ecological benefits and that it's just the ethical thing to do.

Over a century ago, wolves were considered a scourge to the developing American West. The predators caused millions in annual losses to ranching and agricultural industries that fueled the economy, prompting government officials to mostly eradicate them from the continental US.

Last month I went to Colorado to write about how wolves explain America's urban-rural divide . I know that sounds like a crazy story but wolves are highly influential -- to the environment and to the economy. (1/8)

This NBA draft TV studio setup for the second round feels so small-time, like we went back to the 70s when no one even knew a draft was going on.
