"Mrs. McSheene, can I keep doing these practice problems? They're fun." Doing some @Desmos activities today from their curriculum. Honestly surprised at how engaged the kids are staying with only 8 school days remaining. #mtbos #desmos #iteachmath

The LOVE wrap on the sign outside @CardinalsLHS is looking better than ever. The old one was a little worn after hanging outside for a year, so I gave it a nice wash, flipped inside out since the outside had faded, and crocheted some new letters. #PrideMonth #crochet

So proud of our @CardinalsLHS Knitting and Crochet Club and the amazing mural we made for #PrideMonth. Starting this club this year has brought me so much joy, and I can't wait to continue creating more with these kids next year. πŸ§ΆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ@LTPS1

"This is the best class we've ever had.".-actual quote from a freshman in my Algebra 1. Thanks @Desmos for the plethora of engaging activities. Today we're doing "Will it hit the hoop", my favorite way to introduce Quadratic functions. #mtbos #desmos #iteachmath.

Introducing algebra tiles today with inspiration from @mathequalslove. Always so much better when the kids actually get into the activity! #algebratiles #mtbos #iteachmath

Today's afternoon PD: Self care. Taking care of staff and wellness is very important, always appreciative when our district takes it seriously. @LTPS1

Last time I was at the CURE arena was almost two years ago for our last in person graduation. It feels very different today, but very fitting getting my vaccine here. I know we still have a long way to go, but I'm so happy to have taken this step forward. #wearamask

I'm still a bit in shock. Some last minute appointment openings last night and I managed to snag an appointment for today over my lunch break. Feeling so grateful today. The sun is shining, it feels like spring and hope.

Thanks @ms_murphyPVHS for an awesome #amtnj PD on @Desmos computation layer. I feel ready to start making some of my own CL from scratch finally! Also appreciated the #SchittsCreek references.

And now, my teacher heart is full, and I'm going to just sit back and enjoy this moment, this brief win amidst all the stress and anxiety and chaos of virtual-soon-to-be-hybrid learning. And enjoy this connection I made and this new path we are on together. 10/10.

We talked for almost 15 minutes until I was summoned by another student for help in another breakout room and reluctantly left. She was in tears, I was fully misty eyed. We made a plan to move forward. 9/10.

Again and again, she just kept thanking me for taking the time to reach out to her and talk to her about it. She kept talking about how grateful she was to get it off her chest. She kept comparing me to all the teachers of her past who would have never given her the chance. 8/10.

She talked of the struggles she had with virtual learning, how she couldn't just stay after class a few extra minutes to ask questions when everyone else left. (We talked about ways we could do that virtually). 7/10.

She told me how guilty she felt that day and every time in my class since. The guilt when her parents congratulate her for a grade she didn't earn. She thanked me for talking to her about it. "Most teachers would just give you a 0 and never even talk to you." 6/10.

I promised to her I wasn't trying to trap her, I just wanted honesty. She told me. I asked WHY and it just came POURING out. She gets so anxious on tests, she second guesses herself, she's afraid to lose points and pull down her grade. So she panicked. 5/10.

I decided to try and make it a teachable moment. So when I had the kids in their own breakout rooms, I leveled with her, told her what I saw when I checked her work and compared it to photomath. And asked her to just be honest with me and tell me the truth. She paused. 4/10.

But it was late. So I took a breath, decided to sleep on it, and waited to talk to her. The way I saw it, though she certainly would have "deserved" the 0, that blow to her grade would probably alienate her further, destroy her motivation, and just spiral her further down. 3/10.

When I first saw the blatant plagiarism, I was mad. I was frustrated. I may have written a few abrupt comments on Google classroom on her submitted "work". I was tempted to just put the 0 in the grade book right then and there. 2/10.
