Enjoyed by conversation with CSU President @CSUAmyParsons and the Straayer Center's @SammyLaw about CSU's democracy efforts for her new Next 150 podcast.
With election season right around the corner, there's no better time to feature CSU's civic engagement powerhouse duo Martín Carcasson and Sam Houghteling on episode 5 of The Next 150! . Listen here 🎧

One the best parts of my job is to see former students go out into the world and do good work! Congrats Willow (and congrats to the DCI for hiring her).
We’re thrilled to welcome Willow Paul as our new Assistant Director! Her expertise in deliberative democracy will enhance our mission. Stay tuned for exciting work from Willow! Read more about her here: #Democracy #DCI #Leadership

The good news is because of #2, it is clearly possible to depolarize. Reality is on our side. And more and more organizations and scholars are focused on this issue nationally and locally (look at all the logos connected to the Listen First Coalition).

Two things I believe are true: 1. polarization is our #1 issue. Can’t deal w any other issue well b/c of it. 2. Polarization is greatly exaggerated and manufactured. The study below has some new insights on the latter. Sadly, perception > reality, so #1 is still true despite #2.
One of the most fascinating papers I've read for a long time: People dislike their political opponents for views most don't actually hold. [No paywall]

I describe my work as designing processes focused on avoiding triggering the worst in human nature and tapping into the best. Sadly, people make alot more money doing the opposite. "Goading people into participating as the worst version of themselves" is a nice way to phrase it.
"What we are witnessing is an information system working as designed. It is a machine that rewards speed, bravado, and provocation. It is a machine that goads people into participating as the worst version of themselves. " from @cwarzel .

Tapper should ask them both the shark versus electrocution question tonight.
Sarah Cooper returns with "How to Boat.". He’s always given her a wealth of material to work with, but Trump’s bit about the shark/electric boat was probably just too hard for her to resist so she took his insanity and turned it into comedy gold.
