Today we mourn the loss of one of the mothers of the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans with the passing of Lucille Bridges — mother of five, including Ruby Bridges, who as a first-grader in 1960 was one of six black children to integrate the all-white William Frantz School.
I have been hearing the rumors on the streets. 👀 I don't know if they are true or not. But, I just want
@dangerusswilson
&
@ciara
to know that if these rumors are true. Please know that the City of New Orleans will welcome you and your family with open arms!

Leah Chase was a legend, an icon and an inspiration. It is impossible to overstate what she meant to our City and to our community. At Dooky Chase’s Restaurant: she made creole cuisine the cultural force that it is today.

We’re all so proud of you!!🎉⚜️
Lucille insisted, seeing the action as an opportunity to help all Black children, and walked Ruby, with federal marshals, past chanting and taunting white protesters and to the schoolhouse. Mother and daughter both revealed their character and courage.
Today, folks recall Ruby as the little girl depicted in Norman Rockwell's painting 'The Problem We All Live With,' and more recently might see a reimagining of the image now including Vice President-elect Kamala Harris walking alongside little Ruby.
I think I speak for all mothers who want the best for their children when I hope for the same moral courage, bravery and love as that of Lucille Bridges. May she rest in God's perfect peace.
"No red flags were given" by the federal government. - New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on why the city moved forward with Mardi Gras celebrations. "If we were given clear direction we would not have had Mardi Gras and I would've been the leader to cancel it."
Lucille's strength was unbounded during this period. Her husband was reluctant when the request came from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to participate.
We are on track for the return of Mardi Gras in 2022!!
Unless we see a dramatic turn for the worse in our COVID numbers, Mardi Gras will roll once again! 💜💚💛🎉

Today I signed a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) between the City and the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) to ensure that the former Six Flags Site is redeveloped and that things move in the right direction!
This is progress and I’m beyond excited!🎉💛⚜️
Thank you to
@drewbrees
for everything you have done for our team and community! Working together, you and Sean Payton brought the Saints back after Katrina, and with it, much of our civic pride.

Today,

and I toured the medical surge buildout at the Convention Center. These 1,000 beds will free up ICU space at hospitals needed for the most critically ill, with additional capacity if needed. No walk-up admission—patients will arrive from hospitals.
So this morning, we’re taking over for the 99 and the 2000s! Today, we honored New Orleans’ very own Teruis Gray, but we all know him as Juvenile. It was indeed an honor to present a Son of the City with a Key to the City of New Orleans.

We have a lot to be proud of in the City of New Orleans, I know that I am!💚💛💜 🎉🎉
Being able to pull off Mardi Gras 2023 with a unified command that went deeper than we’ve ever seen before…with crowds that we haven’t seen for decades plus! It was truly amazing!!
Ellis Marsalis was a legend. He was the prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz. The love and the prayers of all of our people go out to his family, and to all of those whose lives he touched.

Anne Rice made New Orleans a character in her work.💛⚜️And she in turn was an irreplaceable part of the character of New Orleans. We have lost an icon.

Today I celebrate my 50th birthday!!🎉🎊🥳
As I celebrate, I find myself reflecting on these past few years!
Birthday’s make you reflect on where you’ve been, where you’re going, and how you spend your time…because nothing is guaranteed…
As Juneteenth approaches, we celebrated with an unveiling in Lafayette Sq.🖤❤️💚💛
This sculpture is very fitting for this time & place as we celebrate the freedoms that we have gained
We know that it doesn’t come without struggles, fights, and protests for 200+ years
Starting today, everyone in New Orleans age 12+ must show proof of at least 1 dose of a
#COVID
vaccine or a negative PCR test within the last 72hrs to do activities with a higher risk of transmission
We want to keep our people safe, without shutting down again & this is the way!
I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to the residents of New Orleans for trusting in my leadership and believing that, for New Orleans, the best is truly yet to come.💛🙏👏
Had a great time at Madame Vice President Kamala Harris’s Residence!

We have now lost power, citywide! This is the time to continue to remain in your safe places. It isn’t a time to venture out!!
We will get through this together! 💪⚜️
The death of Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsberg is a terrible blow. We mourn her loss, and salute her phenomenal career. She was a trailblazer and an inspiration, and a tireless champion for true justice.

Ellis Marsalis was an icon — and words aren’t sufficient to describe the art, the joy & the wonder he showed the world. May we wrap his family in our love & our gratitude, & may we honor his memory by coming together in spirit— even as the outbreak keeps us apart, for a time.
For 5 decades, Fred Parker was a beloved part of Christmas for so many families in NOLA. Whether they called him Chocolate Santa, 7th Ward Santa, or Mr. Parker — thousands called him a friend, & made him part of their annual celebrations. May he rest in God’s perfect peace. 🎅🏿❤️

The big news & the BEST news is that MARDI GRAS 2022 IS HAPPENING!🎉💛💜💚
No krewe is being moved from their traditional day. Every parade will be asked to make SLIGHT accommodations
No one is being singled out!
No one is being given special treatment!
Leah Chase served presidents and celebrities, she served generations of locals and visitors, and she served her community. She was a culture-bearer in the truest sense. We are poorer for her loss, and richer for having known and having loved her. She will be badly missed.
As many as 11 polling sites may be without power by Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office has refused to take responsibility for supplying needed generator power.

Today, we honor Civil Rights Activist Ms. Ruby Bridges on her 67th birthday.🥳
Ms. Bridges was one of the first African American students to desegregate an elementary school in the South at the age of six, which changed the world. She is the epitome of New Orleans Black History.
I was heartbroken to learn of the passing of Adella Gautier — known to those that loved her as “Adella Adella the Storyteller”.
She shared her gifts as a storyteller with the children of New Orleans for over five decades, and we mourn her loss deeply.
The City of New Orleans is in mourning.
The New Orleans Police Department is in mourning.
The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club is in mourning.
We’re all mourning with the Briscoe family- the loss of Detective Briscoe, who will never be forgotten.
Congratulations to Baldwin & Co on your grand opening today. Thank you for your investment in the economic growth of this community! May you continue to succeed in all your endeavors on this day and all to come.

Orleans Parish will not move into ‘Phase Two’ this Friday. As we have said throughout this pandemic: we are watching the data, not the date. We don’t yet have sufficient data to authorize opening up further at this point.
At present, no NFL stadium in the country with a fixed-roof facility is allowing such an exception. We will continue to monitor the public health data, but cannot set an artificial timeline for how and when conditions may allow for the kind of special exemption being requested.
The City has and will shut down businesses who continue to be out of compliance. There will be accountability. There must be for the safety of the community.
It is my absolute pleasure to say that after a one-year hiatus due to COVID, Mardi Gras is returning to NOLA!💜💛💚
Carnival Season began in true NOLA fashion, with King’s Day, or “the Epiphany”alongside the Krewes of Rex & Zulu, and all the other Carnival Krewes in attendance⚜️
Today I issued a citywide mask mandate and also mandated that all city employees get vaccinated, effective immediately!
These are the most immediate and tangible things we can do to slow the spread!!
Effective immediately, masks will be required indoors in Orleans Parish, regardless of your vaccination status. This is in order to curb the dangerous and rapid spread of the
#Delta
variant.
When indoors with anyone who is not a member of your immediate household, wear a mask.
Old to me, new to you!🌹💛
I’m still overwhelmed with joy over the progress we’ve made with the success of Mardi Gras 2022.
The City of New Orleans was beyond ready and overly prepared to execute…and we did just THAT!💥🎉

Today, I signed the Responsible Firearms Storage Ordinance.
This will create fines & penalties for adults who do not safely store their violent, deadly weapons.
This is transformative & will promote responsibility, while holding adults accountable.
Do your part — it matters‼️
Unacceptable and during a PANDEMIC.

It broke my heart to learn that Jerome Cosey — our 5th Ward Weebie — has passed. Let me find out you didn't know who he was ... He was an iconic personality, a New Orleans legend, and a beloved friend.
Grateful for another trip around the sun! 🥂🎉
Thank you to all who have reached out and wished me a happy birthday!
I love you right back, New Orleans 💛⚜️
