Also, on the subject of Rooney and a particular criticism that bothers me that she writes about love/romance only, and thus it’s not entirely serious literature, maybe the problem here is that male writers shy away from one of the most important subjects in life

How hostile and individualistic the UK has become, that even when presented with a person in obvious need of resources and community, such potent cynicism persists. Even if this person were to be a con artist of some sort, on what planet would that be a profession of choice

Sat in a Starbucks and an obviously houseless person has just come in with a cup to ask customers for change. The family next to me have, for the past 5 minutes, been rattling on about how 'his sort make £100 a day' and how 'they could do with money like that'

Half of humanity will devote itself to reading and studying what the other half has put down. And contemplation will take up as much time as possible—time to be subtracted from horrid real life. If one part of humanity rebels and refuses to read the lucubrations of the other part

It is bizarre to sit and listen to someone speak in person for the first time that you feel like you already know intimately through their storytelling. Zadie Smith's books were the first stories I read growing up that I saw myself in. She put so many of my unvoiced thoughts

Just attended a talk and chatted with my favourite author of all time @zadiesmith 😁😁😁!!!! Excited to see the Wife of Willesden again, but this time in Boston. Interested to see how an American audience responds in comparison to the Kilburn one I last sat in.

There is so much opportunity for engaging and exciting storytelling on these apps. Long form essays and intimate features could and should be adapted into the most wonderful video series / podcasts

This is why news outlets need to digitalise content and create multimedia stories in a variety of formats, especially on video platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. If this is where a growing number of ppl (especially young) are looking for news - follow them

I wonder how much of this can be explained by the types of pupils encouraged to apply at each of these schools, and how many. Schools with significant resources can prep more students for the exams, applications, and interviews, and so probably encourage a larger number to apply
