Excited to be an investor in Preventive! More than 300 million people globally live with genetic disease. Foundational research should be done to determine if safe and effective therapies can be developed to cure these diseases at birth. It is far easier to correct a smaller
Excited to announce Preventive, a PBC dedicated to rigorous research into the safety of embryo editing for preventing disease. We've raised ~$30M and believe that if proven safe, this could be one of the most important health technologies of our lifetimes🧵

I believe that if this technology can be proven safe, it could one day save millions of lives. Excited to work with @CRISPR_LuCas and others to investigate this pre-clinically.

The journey of life is an individual journey. No one can go on it for anyone else. This is the REAL fundamental reason underlying why all social structures/plans/actions which diminish individual responsibility end up being dead ends.

There's a new kind of biotech company in silicon valley, the 'human enhancement company'. I believe this is the next new category of technology company to yield not only a >$100B household name, but to truly uplevel human health and wellbeing. These companies are

This was an exceptionally cogent articulation from Roelof about the state of venture capital. "There's a lot more talent than really interesting companies to be built. And I think we're spreading a lot of that talent thin right now." "Venture is a return-free risk."
This week's Uncapped guest was @roelofbotha, who runs Sequoia. We talked about his psychology leading the firm, how Sequoia makes decisions, and his views on the state of technology markets today. Unsurprisingly, I learned a ton. Hope you enjoy listening.

2 years ago veteran endurance athlete, Kurt Madden, was given a few pouches of VESPA. Initially he blew it off, but due to the persistence of his friend Mike McKovitch, he decided to give it a whirl on a training brick (bike/run) and his world changed . . . . . . fast forward to

I am fascinated by animal toxins and I think now is the best time to build and dig through massive venom biobanks to discover the next wave of billion dollar blockbuster drug classes. 🐍🧵

100% agree with this. ZIRP years created a normality of extreme talent dilution across too many companies in each sector
I think it’s very healthy for the ecosystem when founders convince other early stage founders to drop what they’re doing and join their company. It creates more talent clustered on better ideas and the rate at which both sides end up happy is high.

NEW: Progressives have a birth rate problem For all the talk of a general fall in births, the drop is overwhelmingly driven by people on the left having fewer kids. By ceding the topic of family and children to the right, progressives risk ushering in a more conservative world.

Apparently I've been an AI / @OpenAI fan boy since 2016 when I emailed @mattkrisiloff asking if they had an email list. How far things have come since then!

I'd love to see the creation of a US Biobank, where the federal gov pays for any 🇺🇸 citizen to voluntarily have their genome sequenced. Benefit to the citizen, medical science, and the healthcare system. How do we make this happen?

CDC just published that 🇺🇸 birth rate dropped again last year from 1.62 to 1.59. I think this will be a bigger social issue in our lifetimes than even climate change.

Exciting to see! Trials abroad like this are an increasingly big deal.
🇦🇪 We’re launching our first clinical trial in the Middle East at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in partnership with the Department of Health Abu Dhabi! The UAE-PRIME trial explores how individuals with motor and speech impairment can use thought to control devices & communicate.
