During WWII, German and Italian POWs captured in North Africa were held at camps in rural KS. Many worked on farms to offset the wartime labor shortage. Some even attempted to escape Shawshank Redemption style!

And Berinsky (2007), citing Mueller (1973)…"support for the U.S. effort at the time was not as self-evident as it was in retrospect. As Mueller aptly notes, 'the major reasons for supporting [WWII] were largely unappreciated while it was going on' (1973, 65).".

Contrast with Klingberg (1952)…"Confidence that America will continue to play this [leadership] role in world affairs is weakened by the memory of America's political isolation following World War I, and by certain currents of American opinion noted by observers since [WWII]."

"In the mysterious zone where history mixes with memory to breed national myths, Americans after 1945 enshrined another war altogether. It was the ‘good war,’ maybe the last good war. " (856).

A couple quotes that capture the idea: WWII. "ended a century and a half of American isolationism" (855) and "the stubborn tradition of American isolationism." (xi).

I always learn a lot from reading acknowledgments. Coincidentally, Kennedy wrote this one 25 years ago today!

Returning to Kennedy’s (1999) history of the US in WWII for examples of the "WWII as watershed" thesis.

It’s worth emphasizing Austin's point that the construction of foreign policy "consensus" is inherently political. Appeals to consensus can’t be taken for granted. Rather, it points to interesting behind the scenes politics worth exploring and theorizing.

Both the Oxford Handbook on Historical Political Economy and the Handbook on World War II are dropping around the same time next year. Great timing for dissertation writing + the TOC for both look fantastic. Also digging the UN propaganda poster for the WWII cover.
