How might our everyday actions change perception? . Out today @NatureComms we show that walking rhythmically modulates how sensitive we are to the environment. The latest from my final days as a postdoc with @DAVElab at @UsydPsych . OA paper: 🧵 1/7

🥳 I'm thrilled to share I've received an @arc_gov_au #DECRA to study how walking modulates perception + cognition. The next 3yrs will focus on #biorhythms and #mobileEEG. It takes a village, and I'm very grateful to all of my mates, mentors and peers for their ongoing support 🍻.

. and here's a plain language summary of our recent paper that showed oscillations in perception in sync with our steps.

Using VR, psychology researchers found our brains oscillate with each step. 👣 "[. ] it’s as if your brain takes rhythmic snapshots of the world – and they are synchronised with the rhythm of your footfall," writes @matt_j_davidson (@Sydney_Uni).

7) Thanks for reading! . Huge thanks to Profs David Alais (@The_DAVE_Lab) and Frans Verstraten for their support. Stay tuned for similar oscillations in audition (and more) while walking (preprint soon), and if you'd like to test your favourite task, please reach out!.🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️.

6) Of course there's lots more in the paper, and we tentatively link these oscillations to similar examples based on the reset of endogenous cortical oscillations on the initiation of a voluntary action. The key here is that they sped/slowed to match the rhythm of footfall.

5) On average, performance was better in the swing phase between steps, but higher frequency and counterphase oscillations were also common in our sample. Oscillations were idiosyncratic and stable - conserved per participant across different performance metrics.
