TLDR of the last 2 months: It's Yudkowsky's world, we're all just living in it. 1. Instrumental convergence is real: Sakana AI (RLFHed!) agent turns off its timeout, vindicating instrumental convergence & self-preservation. 2. Reward hacking is back: o1 interprets too literally

It's a bit cringe that this agent tried to change its own code by removing some obstacles, to better achieve its (completely unrelated) goal. It reminds me of this old sci-fi worry that these doomers had.. 😬

Will PhD help you grow intellectually? No. Is it good for your professional development? No. Well at least it’s good for your mental health. Also no.

Pretty strong evidence of negative mental health effects of doing a PhD. Recent working paper by @EvaRanehill, @annahsandberg, Sanna Bergvall, and Clara Fernström. Paper link: https://t.co/7X4uEjzPCC

Human language LLMs are so passe. Read about this work on a whale bioacoustics model that can identify eight distinct species, including multiple calls for some of these species (e.g. the "biotwang" of the Bryde's whale). I'm going to say this until I'm blue in the face, but

Introducing our new whale bioacoustics model, which can identify eight distinct species, including multiple calls for two of those species. The model even includes the “Biotwang” sounds recently attributed to the Bryde’s whale. Learn more at: https://t.co/VL1qWfZvDU

Einstein never "denied" quantum mechanis. He accepted it as a useful model to describe observations, he merely thought that it was an approximation of a deeper yet-to-be-found theory. Or as he put it, it was "incomplete". I think he was right. https://t.co/iIER7lj6sX

According to Yann: A man who builds rockets, electric cars and more, is not doing science because it isn't published. This is how deep the "science = journals" rot goes. I don't need publications on the rockets, I can watch them take off live!
