BREAKING: ORCAS AND A BABY PILOT WHALE 😱😱😱😱 Yesterday our team found a group of playful #orcas and to our absolute astonishment amongst the orcas was a newborn pilot whale. There were no observations of pilot whales in the area the whole day. Where did this baby come from? 😱

Fascinating trip over the mountains to Bergen today to collect killer whale teeth from #MULTIWHALE collaborators @Havforskningen! 🤩🐳🦷 Did you know that you can not only use teeth to find the age of a killer whale, but you can measure diet and mercury levels too?! 😆 @BorgaK

The #SouthernOcean is critical habitat for #whales that feed on #krill –key species of the Antarctic food web. As #climatechange shifts krill south, migrating whales face potential long-term negative impacts. We must act now to #ProtectBlueCorridors & establish #MPAs @WWF_Whales

#TursiopsTuesday Recently we observed #F308 seawall feeding: a foraging behavior where #dolphins chase fish toward a seawall & use it as a barrier to catch the fish. He caught a large mullet, which he tossed around a bit before eating. #fromthefield #animalbehavior #yum

Today I learned. This is a dulla, or diverticulum, a two chambered pocket in the soft palate of dromedary camels. Males inflate theirs during the mating season to attract females. It is present, though smaller in females, but has not been observed in any other camelid.

In honor of this week's episode, here is a little thread on animals who are WAY bigger than you might think they are if you've never seen them in person. First up is naturally the wombat, which can weigh up to 88lbs. 📷: Jess Schmidt (@/jesska_schmidt, instagram)
