Through a case study, we find that #Rust programmers indeed need not be fearful when expressing easy parallelism, but when parallelism gets hard (e.g., irregular run-time varying data dependences) #Rust is not inherently easier to use than its predecessors like C++.

Proud advisor moment 2: Javad Abdi convocated in Toronto as I presented his work at #spaa2024 (his choice!) Javad's work interrogates the #Rust programming language claim of fearless concurrency. Paper: https://t.co/JFd8RZTjbp

Proud advisor moment: Guozheng Zhang presented at #spaa2024. Ordered algorithms are hard to scale on manycores, but several priority schedulers have been proposed. We introduce a taxonomy to position past schedulers and explore a new design point: the MBQ https://t.co/XaG5Wq5P1K

The industry shift to chiplets lowers cost but can hurt performance. We find that the performance penalty of chiplets varies wildly across parallel applications (up to almost 2x slowdown) and correlates with invalidation intensity: INV msgs/instr. See more in our paper!

Appendix 1: This 50% increase only accounts for inflation, and clearly is inadequate for the housing affordability crisis. We need further action on this. (8/7)

This petition calls upon the Government to support the Tri-Agency (@NSERC_CRSNG , @CIHR_IRSC , @SSHRC_CRSH) in closing this 50% gap in scholarship funding and providing more scholarships and grant funding. https://t.co/VQz36M9oqI (6/7)

But the Canadian research funding story is even more stagnant than my anecdote. The CGS-M value has not increased from $17,500 in 20 years [5]. Had it tracked 2%/year inflation it would be worth ~50% more, or $26,000. (5/n)

I think this is unfair to the current generation of Canadian graduate students who do important work for innovation in Canada. Assuming 2%/year inflation, the CGS-M should be worth at least $22,638 today (still nowhere near covering the increase in rent). (4/n)

In 2023, ~900-1000 Canadians will be awarded $17,500 for the CGS-M [3]. Meanwhile, average rent for a 2-bed in Toronto has surpassed $3300/month [4]. Rent more than doubled but the scholarship value remained the same. (3/n)

In 2010, I was 1 of 1244 Canadian citizens/PRs awarded $17,500 for an NSERC CGS-M. I am grateful. I used the funding to write code [1] and publish a paper [2]. I also split $1500/month rent with a roommate in a 2-bedroom. (2/n)

Please sign and share this petition. Let's tell the Government of Canada that Canadians of 2023 deem research as important a part of the economy as the Canadians of 2003. A thread on funding stagnation. (1/n) https://t.co/VQz36M9oqI
